Storey County inmate hangs self after DUI arrest, officials say

VIRGINIA CITY — An inmate who had been booked on suspicion of driving under the influence apparently hanged himself in his jail cell a few hours later, according to Storey County officials.

Sheriff Gerald Antinoro said there were no signs that the inmate was suicidal after he was arrested about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. KOLO-TV reported that a corrections officer found him dead just after midnight, about 16 minutes after authorities checked on him.

Antinoro said the county has strict policies to monitor inmates for suicidal behavior, and it appears that jail employees followed the rules.

Officials from Storey and Washoe counies are investigating the incident.

The inmate’s name was not released.
