Trial underway for man charged with abusing woman, child and killing 2 dogs

A domestic violence trial is underway for a 29-year-old man charged with strangling his ex-girlfriend, assaulting her 6-year-old son and killing two family dogs.

Brian Rodriguez, who has a criminal history of drug trafficking, faces nearly a dozen counts, including child abuse, home invasion, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and cruelty to animals.

If convicted, Rodriguez could face more than a decade in prison.

Rodriguez has pleaded not guilty.

From May through July 2013 Rodriguez terrorized the woman and her son at their Las Vegas home by stealing money and electronics and pointing a gun at them and threatening to kill them, prosecutors said in court documents. The woman and her son were to testify against the defendant.

The animal cruelty charges stem from accusations that Rodriguez threw one of the dogs and killed it and drowned another. The trial is expected to finish by the end of the week.

This is not Rodriguez’ first run-in with the law. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking charge and was sentenced to probation at first. In 2010, he violated the conditions of his probation and was sentenced prison.
