Detour taken on road of romance

KSNV-TV, Channel 3 anchor Jim Snyder took an untraditional route on the road of romance.

On their way to work Tuesday, Snyder took a detour. During a stop at the Sunbelt Car Collection garage near the station, Snyder presented Jessica Moore, his co-anchor on the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts, with a promise ring on her 30th birthday.

That wasn't the grand plan.

He had hoped to make the move on Sunday, dropping to one knee while they viewed the annular eclipse after a ride to Pioche in his white 1968 convertible Pontiac Firebird.

But the plan went awry when restoration work on the car wasn't complete.

So, he decided to make it part of her birthday.

Why a promise ring?

"It's something from days gone by," Snyder said. "She knows I have to do things a little creative and different, and she was touched by the whole thing."

The promise ring had an unorthodox twist as well. Because their first date was in the car, the ring is shaped like a Firebird emblem. "Liberace, anyone?" Snyder joked.

His first "move" was on Sept. 18, 2010, he said, when he invited her to see Red Rock in the Firebird.

She had arrived a few weeks earlier from Lexington, Ky., for an anchor job that opened when Snyder was moved to an early evening anchor chair.

They were recently paired as co-anchors.

The ring, he said, was all about "letting her know I'm in this for the long haul."

Before they get engaged, he'll take the traditional route: He plans to ask Moore's father for his daughter's hand.

Snyder added a special touch to the inside of the trunk of the car. Embroidered on the carpet: "9-18-2010 The Journey Begins."
