Fans must wait for big Strip arena

The record still stands. It has been 30 years since a record boxing crowd of 29,214 gathered in Las Vegas.

The record set by heavyweights Larry Holmes and Gerry Cooney on June 11, 1982, may be safe for several more years after recent events put the next superfight on hold.

The hoped-for Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao match will have to be sorted out later after Pacquiao's controversial split-decision loss to Tim Bradley on Saturday.

According to fight promoter Bob Arum, a temporary 40,000-seat outdoor arena was under consideration by MGM Resorts International, with the site located east of the Luxor.

But it never got off the mat.

Holmes and Cooney fought on a parking lot next to Caesars Palace in an arena built to hold 32,000 boxing fans.

Promoter Don King had referred to Cooney as "The Great White Hope" during the 1982 fight buildup. A Caucasian had not held the heavyweight title since Sweden's Ingemar Johansson in 1959.

Holmes stopped the 6-foot-6 Cooney in the 13th round of what was the largest grossing boxing match at the time.
