LETTER: State lottery unconstitutional, unneeded

To the editor:

Tim Hicks’ letter proves he has not been in Nevada very long (“Lottery for Nevada,” Oct. 30 Review-Journal). Mr. Hicks blames the casinos and says they will not allow a lottery.

Let me set the record straight: A lottery is against the Nevada Constitution. It would take a lot of years and voting to change the constitution. Has Mr. Hicks ever tried to change the U.S. Constitution?

Let me also say, a lottery doesn’t guarantee money will be used to improve schools or anything else. Tell me, how great are California or Arizona schools, and schools in other states with lotteries? Do the districts actually use the money to improve schools, or just to give administrators higher salaries?

We do not need a lottery. If you are that desperate to spend your money and improve Nevada, there are many other ways to do so.

LETTER: Sonia Sotomayor, retirement and race

Using race to justify or condemn the action of others is simply wrong and, some would say, the definition of racism. We are all one people.

LETTER: Is there another Joe Biden out there?

Both the front-runner presidential candidates should step aside and give us some choices who are younger and have fresh ideas to get us out of the $35 trillion debt.

Clearly, some of Trump’s statements in recent months have driven a wedge between his campaign and religious voters, particularly those all-important evangelicals.
