LETTERS: Graney’s ‘Deflategate’ joke falls flat
February 9, 2016 - 6:36 pm
Regarding Ed Graney’s article on the NFL honoring the high school of every player or head coach who was on an active roster in one of the previous 49 Super Bowls (“NFL passes out golden footballs,” Feb. 4 Review-Journal), when will Mr. Graney and the rest of the country move on from this “Deflategate” nonsense? It was a disaster from the start by the NFL. Any reasonable person who has followed the case and not just the headlines knows this.
A federal judge asked the NFL under oath what evidence it had against Tom Brady, and the league’s answer was a direct “none.” End of case, end of story. I do not care about nicknames and phones as circumstantial evidence.
Now, during Super Bowl week, the NFL decides not to release the PSI readings taken during random games throughout the 2015 season. Gee, I can’t imagine why the NFL would not want these readings released. They could prove Mr. Brady guilty or innocent. As usual, the NFL is controlling the information flow. If people would like to educate themselves, please check out other news organizations.
I have come to expect much more from Mr. Graney than trying to get a cheap laugh at the expense of someone going through a witch hunt. And let’s not open the door on the Peyton Manning-human growth hormone allegations. Remember, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell only needs to think a player is breaking a rule, and he can suspend the player without evidence, as was the case with Mr. Brady. Yet the Peyton Manning issue is being swept under the rug. Such hypocrisy.
Imagine if HGH had allegedly been shipped to Mr. Brady’s home in his wife’s name? It would be a 24-hour news cycle.

Harming rooftop solar
If you have not followed the latest move by NV Energy to harm its ratepayers, read the brief article in the Jan. 13 Review-Journal, “Transmission line will grow in Clark County.” Quoting from the article: “A transmission line that is expected to significantly increase Nevada’s ability to export clean energy will soon be under construction in Clark County. … In a statement, U.S. Sen. Reid said the ON Line Project will increase Nevada’s ability to export clean energy, creating opportunities for more large renewable energy projects.”
Gov. Brian Sandoval was also cited in the article, calling the project a step forward that will accelerate the integration and exportation of Nevada’s renewable energy resources, including geothermal, solar and wind.
It shouldn’t take a genius to see the writing on the wall. NV Energy will pay 13.5 cents per kWh for power from the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Plant in Tonopah, plus a 1 percent annual increase in that rate. As a customer, you will pay substantially more. Rooftop solar owners were receiving 11.5 cents for that same energy that was passed on to you, and rooftop solar owners were paying full cost for energy during the times we were not making it. The Public Utilities Commission’s new ruling increased the monthly service charge and decreased the net metering credit for Nevada’s solar pioneers, who were led to believe we were doing something good for this state.
Usually, a change in policy would only affect new customers who might consider going solar in the future. No other PUC in the U.S. has attacked existing solar customers like this. How the three members of the PUC can consider themselves public servants with the best interest of Nevadans in mind is beyond belief. An unbiased energy consulting firm hired by the state found no basis for the claim rooftop solar created additional costs to nonsolar users. Studies in other states have shown that the value of solar was significantly beneficial for both rooftop system users and the utility company.
Believe me, the building of this 65-mile transmission line is going to cost you more so that NV Energy can wholesale our solar power out of state. The only thing that rooftop solar owners asked was that the PUC stand up for programs that the state and federal agencies are still heavily promoting. If the PUC turns on us, it will do the same to you.
