Sanders backers should be Democrats first

I’m old enough to have experienced many presidential campaigns, having worked the Stevenson one and lived through the 1968 convention in Chicago. I’ve had my doubts about both Democratic candidates, but I have been leaning toward Bernie Sanders, hoping he can come up with a way to implement his ideas.

However, because of the disruption by his followers at the Nevada Democratic convention this past weekend, I can no longer consider him my choice. He has failed to rally his followers to be Democrats first, and by doing so, he may be closing the door on competency in the White House after Jan. 20.

IRS witch-hunt?

A Review-Journal story last week reported that U.S. Sen Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, has asked Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske to provide information regarding more than 1,000 limited liability corporations registered in Nevada and linked to a Panamanian law firm that is at the center of the Panama Papers controversy.

Ms. Cegavske is doing a fine job at the position to which the voters elected her. If she were legally obligated to provide this information as a matter of national security, I would certainly hope she’d cooperate. But if this is for an IRS witch-hunt, I would hate her to do the feds dirty work — they certainly have enough agencies to do the job on their own.

Sue happy

Recently, my granddaughter was struck in the face with the ball during soccer practice. The ball smashed into her eyeglasses, causing a few noticeable bruises on her forehead and cheek from the frames. After a few moments to regroup, she got up and finished practice — a kiss on the forehead, a quick stop for some frozen yogurt, home, shower and to bed. Ready to fight another day. Happy ending.

My story ends here. However, along the lines of “too much ice in my iced coffee,” here’s what we see happening in similar situations.

Let’s sue the eyeglass company for making frames so hard that they caused serious injury once the ball hit them. Let’s sue the sporting goods company for making a ball with an outer shell that’s too hard and can cause serious injury. Let’s sue Clark County for cutting the grass so short that the ball travelled must faster than it was designed to and caused serious injury. Let’s sue the league for holding practice on a night when the winds exceeded 2 mph, creating an unsafe condition resulting in serious injury.

Sound ludicrous? I wish that were true. I’m tired of the litigious insanity.

Burro shoot

Although it would be controversial, there is a way to control the wild horse and burro population (“Wild horse, burro herds increase,” Thursday Review-Journal). That is to make them big-game animals.

I’m sure there would be enough avid hunters to overcome the cultural bias against eating horse meat. Horses are much more finicky than cattle about what they eat. Horse meat is considered a delicacy in Europe and Canada. And many Mexicans say burro meat makes the best machaca.

LETTER: Sonia Sotomayor, retirement and race

Using race to justify or condemn the action of others is simply wrong and, some would say, the definition of racism. We are all one people.

LETTER: Is there another Joe Biden out there?

Both the front-runner presidential candidates should step aside and give us some choices who are younger and have fresh ideas to get us out of the $35 trillion debt.

LETTER: Deciphering progressive jargon

I noticed recently that euphemisms are commonly used by progressives in order to make the agenda they support seem less harsh or unpleasant.

LETTER: Biden ignores the Supreme Court on student loans

Biden is constantly harping on how Trump is a threat to democracy and will be a dictator, eliminating our freedoms. It is Biden, however, who has proven himself the dictator who is threatening democracy.

LETTER: More on 1968

As a cop who was at not only at the 1968 Democratic convention at the Conrad Hilton on Michigan Avenue, but also the Chicago arson fires on the west side, I feel there were many reasons why the city was a tinderbox.
