Reid Nevada’s delegation chairman at Democratic National Convention

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., will be the Nevada delegation chairman at the 2016 Democratic National Convention in July, the state Democratic Party said Friday.

The state party also announced the delegates elected to serve on the convention’s three standing committees.

Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani, a delegate supporting Hillary Clinton, will be on the rules committee.

Christine Kramar, a delegate who supports Bernie Sanders, will be on the platform committee.

Alfonso Lopez, a delegate who supports Hillary Clinton, will be on the credentials committee.

The national convention in Philadelphia is from July 25 to July 28.

Nevada will have 43 delegates at the convention.

Nevada voters supported Clinton over Sanders in the February caucuses.

Clinton has 20 pledged delegates from Nevada and Sanders has 15. The remaining eight superdelegates are elected officials or party leaders who are unpledged and free to support who they wish.

DMV OVERPAYMENT CREATES PROBLEM

The Clark County School District will have to trim an additional $1 million from its 2016-17 spending plan after the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles announced an overpayment in governmental services tax imposed on vehicle registrations.

At about $5.2 million, the district collected the lion’s share of a $19.1 million windfall that local schools and governments collected over the past three years due to a DMV computer programming glitch.

The district “had been receiving $1.3 million annually in the general fund and over $600,000 in capital funds that it should not have been receiving,” the district said in a statement.

District officials now must find $1 million to carve from its 2016-17 budget to reflect the change in tax collections.

After increasing class sizes and cutting $35.4 million from the budget, the Clark County School Board on Wednesday approved a more than $2.2 billion spending plan for the next academic year. Board members will consider adjustments to the final budget at a December meeting.
