Mountain's Edge to celebrate new park with Summer Splash

Nathaniel Jones Park at Mountain's Edge plans to host a Summer Splash event to celebrate its official grand opening.

The free event will be held 3-7 p.m. June 23 at the 20-acre park at 8800 Sparkling Chandon Drive in Mountain's Edge, a master-planned community in the southwest valley developed by Focus Property Group. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 4 p.m. near the park entrance.

Summer Splash activities will feature inflatable water slides and a squirt gun fight tent that will house an activity that is similar to paint ball but with squirt guns. The tent will have large barrels for people to maneuver between and hide behind to squirt their friends and family with water. Squirt guns will be provided or attendees can bring their own.

Festivities also will include a DJ, dancing, arts and crafts, scavenger hunt, petting zoo, pony rides and vendor booths. Several food vendors will be selling hamburger, hot dogs and funnel cakes.

The new park offers a lighted basketball court, a tot lot with shade structure, splash pad, large turf areas, walking trails and shade structures.

Plants, shrubs, trees and ground covering in the park and throughout the southwest Las Vegas master plan are drought tolerant, requiring minimal water to thrive.

In keeping with Mountain's Edge's tradition of honoring early Las Vegas Valley pioneers, the park is named for the supervisor of one of the region's first large-scale projects.

When lead and silver reserves were discovered at nearby Potosi Mountain, Nathaniel Jones was sent by Brigham Young to oversee a mining operation in conjunction with the creation of a nearby Mormon outpost and fort in 1855.

A series of paseos wind through the community, connecting residents and their neighborhoods to recreation areas. In addition to the new Nathaniel Jones Park, these include the 80-acre Exploration Park with volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, picnic areas, amphitheater, playgrounds and the 2,846-foot-tall Exploration Peak.

Mountain's Edge is at 9725 S. Buffalo at the intersection of Buffalo and Blue Diamond.
