Summerlin Hospital expands

Summerlin Hospital Medical Center recently celebrated the completion of the hospital's $100 million expansion -- the largest expansion project in its 12-year history.

The expansion included a six-story patient tower that added 173 private patient rooms to the hospital bringing the total number of hospital rooms to 454.

Other additions include an expanded lobby and cafeteria; additional labor, delivery and recovery suites; antepartum and postpartum suites; a newly expanded Level III neo-natal intensive care unit; advanced technology and new beds in a number of key areas including critical care, medical/telemetry and post surgery; an expanded emergency room that more than doubled the size of the hospital's previous emergency room and a three-story parking garage.

According to Robert Freymuller, chief executive officer and managing director for Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, additional space is currently being constructed within the hospital for future expansions that will include four new operating room suites and a third cardiac catheterization laboratory.

"We're continuously growing and evolving with the community," he said. "Each expansion is carefully planned to bring the best and most needed medical services to Summerlin."

Summerlin Hospital Medical Center opened its 40-acre campus in The Crossing village of Summerlin in 1997, when the community's population was less than half of what it is today.

According to Tom Warden, senior vice president of community and government relations for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, the community's nearly 100,000 residents appreciate living close to a well-established and highly regarded medical facility. "We realize the crucial role health plays in an active and vibrant life," he said. "Having convenient access to quality medical care is an essential component of any thriving community."

In addition to Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, Summerlin is home to five medical centers located throughout the community.
