As an elementary student, Lauren Noorda would pick up a copy of the newspaper and take a crack at the day's crossword puzzle. Every now and again, Noorda found her eyes drifting from the minuscule black-and-white boxes to the printed word -- attention-grabbing headlines or enticing leads. Her crossword puzzle fascination soon took another fashion -- by fifth grade, Noorda was reading the newspaper regularly.
