5 players to watch in the 51s-Nashville Sounds series
The Nashville Sounds come to Cashman Field this week for the first time this season to face the 51s. Here are five players to watch in the series:
Sean Gilmartin, LHP, Las Vegas
Gilmartin was called up by the Mets on May 12, made two scoreless relief appearances in the Majors, sent back down on May 17 and then summoned once more to the Mets for a roster move that never happened.
So to say his past couple weeks have been hectic would be an understatement.
Tuesday, he’ll make his first start since May 8. He hasn’t pitched since May 14, though he did get an at-bat in Sunday’s game.
Gilmartin is 4-1 on the season with a 2.48 ERA at Las Vegas.
Josh Phegley, C, Nashville
The Athletics’ catcher will be with the Sounds this week as he continues his rehab from a strained knee.
Phegley should do a mixture of DHing and catching while on his rehab assignment.
Phegley was hitting .270/.308/.324 with Oakland before going down with his injury. He’s played two games so far on his rehab assignment and is 4-for-8 with the Sounds.
Jed Lowrie, 2B, Nashville
Lowrie, too, is supposed to swing through town on Monday on a rehab assignment.
The second baseman has been sidelined with a shin contusion. He’s been out since May 9.
Before that, he was hitting .302 in 32 games with the Athletics.
T.J. Rivera, INF, Las Vegas
Rivera has been on a tear in the past week or so, raising his batting average all the way up to .378.
With Ty Kelly now in the Majors, .378 now leads the Pacific Coast League, as does Rivera’s 40 RBIs and 56 hits.
He’s on a nine-game hitting streak and has multiple hits in each of his past seven games.
Thanks to his performance last week, he was named the PCL Player of the Week on Monday.
Brandon Nimmo, CF, Las Vegas
Like Rivera, Nimmo has had success at the plate lately.
The Mets’ 2011 first round pick is now hitting .289 and is on an eight-game hitting streak.
He drove in four of the team’s six runs in Sunday’s victory with two, two-run doubles and had three hits in the game.
