51s rally in 9th, but fall in 11 innings to Salt Lake

Josh Edgin looked like he might escape.

After pitching himself into a bases-loaded, no outs situation in the 11th inning Sunday night, the 51s reliever retired the next two Salt Lake Bees batters with a strikeout and a force out at home.

But after getting ahead of the next batter, Edgin’s good fortune ran out when Brendan Ryan sent a line drive to right field to lift Salt Lake to a 4-3 Pacific Coast League victory at Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City.

The victory came after Las Vegas had rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth to force extra innings.

After that, the 51s had their chances, getting a runner on in each of the next two innings, but they couldn’t capitalize.

Salt Lake looked like it was headed to victory in the ninth with Javy Guerra, who hadn’t blown a save in 12 attempts this season on the mound to protect a two-run lead.

But it wasn’t Guerra’s night as the 51s’ Eric Campbell doubled to lead off the inning and Johnny Monell delivered an RBI single to drive him in. A couple of batters later, Niuman Romero singled to tie the game.

Salt Lake led most of the game as starter Tim Lincecum, who the 51s had roughed up in late August, gave up just one run on four hits in seven innings.

His Las Vegas counterpart, Tyler Pill, also tossed a quality start, going 7 1/3 innings for his longest Triple-A outing of the year and giving up three runs.
