51s starter Montero too much for River Cats

Las Vegas starter Rafael Montero pitched a one-hit shutout as the 51s defeated the Sacramento River Cats 3-0 Tuesday in Sacramento, Calif. to wrap up a four-game series taking three out of four.

Montero (6-3) allowed only a leadoff single to right field by Nick Buss in the bottom of the fifth inning. He struck out 11 and walked two in eight innings’ work, retiring the last 12 Sacramento batters he faced. Chase Bradford handled the River Cats in the ninth inning to preserve the shutout, striking out the side for his third save of the year.

Las Vegas scored single runs in the first and second innings off Sacramento starter and loser Deck McGuire (1-1) as Matt den Dekker scored on Allan Dykstra’s sacrifice fly in the first and Kevin Plawecki scored on a fielder’s choice in the second after he singled then moved to third on Cesar Puello’s double. The 51s made it 3-0 when Cory Vaughn walked in the top of the sixth, stole second and scored on Anthony Seratelli’s RBI single.

The 51s have today off and return to Cashman Field Thursday to host the Albuquerque Isotopes at 7:05 p.m. Thursday to begin a five-game series.
