Aces pounce on Montero early in 16-10 win over 51s
The 51s allowed a run in every inning but the first and final two Wednesday night, surrendering 15 hits in a 16-10 loss to the Reno Aces at Cashman Field.
“Overall the pitching was bad,” 51s manager Wally Backman said. “Way too many runs tonight.”
The Aces pounced on Las Vegas starter Rafael Montero early, tagging him for nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits and chasing him after 3 2/3 innings. The Aces scored multiple runs in five innings, including five in the fourth.
As it has all season, the Las Vegas offense did its part. The 51s (33-32) scored one in the fourth and five in the fifth. A 9-0 deficit was cut to 12-9 after six innings. The 10 runs were tied for the team’s season high in a losing effort.
“The offense hasn’t been the issue,” Backman said. “If the bullpen holds them, it’s a ballgame again.”
Travis Taijeron hit a grand slam for the 51s, his 10th home run of the season. He also had a double, his team-leading 26th.
Right-hander Edgar Garcia started for Reno (35-30) but lasted only 4 2/3 innings. He allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks.
Injuries
51s right-hander Robert Gsellman was placed on the disabled list before Wednesday’s game, and catcher Jeff Glenn was activated.
Gsellman earned a call-up to Triple A after putting up impressive numbers in Double-A Binghamton. He struggled in his first start with Las Vegas, going three innings and allowing nine runs (five earned).
Backman said this week that Gsellman was battling a quad injury and would miss his next start. He is the Mets’ No. 12 prospect.
Backman also said third baseman T.J. Rivera will be placed on the disabled list Thursday and Niuman Romero will join the team from Binghamton. Romero batted .268 in 12 games with Las Vegas earlier this season.
