BYU football making Las Vegas its second home

Brigham Young is increasing its football presence in Las Vegas.

The Cougars will play Arizona at Sam Boyd Stadium on Sept. 4, 2021, and they will take the place of the Mountain West team in the Las Vegas Bowl either this year or in 2019.

Las Vegas Bowl executive director John Saccenti said he hopes to attract other neutral-site games to Sam Boyd Stadium, but said there some logistical issues such as stadium size that made it difficult. The stadium currently seats 36,800 fans, and it will lose about 1,000 seats because the field will be widened this summer.

As for the bowl itself, BYU reached an agreement to play in place of the Mountain West representative in the Las Vegas and Hawaii bowls. One of those bowls will host the Cougars this year, and the other will take them in 2019.
