Liberty jumps into national rankings following win in Texas

Prep football fans in Nevada are used to seeing one team from the state in the national rankings.

Now, there are two.

Liberty, fresh off last week’s 21-14 upset of Westlake (Texas), jumped up to No. 23 in USA Today’s Super 25 poll that was released Monday. It is the first time the school has appeared in the publication’s national rankings.

Bishop Gorman retained the top spot in the USA Today poll after trouncing Cocoa (Florida) 46-10 in its home opener.

Junior quarterback Kenyon Oblad passed for 281 yards and three touchdowns in Liberty’s victory Friday in Austin, Texas. Westlake entered as the top-ranked team in the Texas Class 6A Associated Press poll and No. 16 in the nation, according to USA Today.

It was the easily the biggest win in program history for the Patriots, who were 1-6 against out-of-state competition dating to 2012.

Liberty is No. 7 in USA Today’s West Region rankings.

Liberty (2-0) has a bye this week before taking on Desert Pines (2-0) on Sept. 15 in a matchup of the No.2 and No. 3 teams in the Southern Nevada Football Coaches Poll. The Patriots also have a chance to impress Sept. 23 when they travel to nationally ranked Corona (California) Centennial.
