Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Jan. 17

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

3 Frandontjudge - Won first out off the claim by John Sadler; is exposed today for $25K, willing to win purse and lose the horse.

5 Too Obvious - Realistic placement by Jeff Bonde off a maiden won; graduated for $50K, spotted in here for only $25K.

Long Shot - 1 Time for Angie

Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

5 Just Dancing - Claimed off her graduation win by Mike Mitchell; he is as sharp as they come moving a horse up.

6 Visions of Candy - Small, under the radar, barn can win races with the right stock; provides steady work for Brice Blanc.

Long Shot - 2 Kylee’s Star

Race 3 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

7 Highly Rated - With the turf rail out 24 feet, I looked for a horse with some early speed; should find a position early on.

2 Lilly’s Perfect - Claimed by Art Sherman off a so-so try; switches to Victor Espinoza, figures to sit chilly for one run.

Long Shot - 5 Tebowing

Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

3 Acute - Mike Mitchell has a chance to win some races today; she has won 2 races here at Santa Anita.

2 Splendiferous - Was given a test drive in last off the claim by Jeff Mullins; expect a lot better effort today.

Long Shot -

Race 5 - 1 1/4 miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up

5 Boyett - Remember I said the turf rail is out 24 feet; that really aids speed horses, or those who can sit close up.

2 Vibrato Jazz - Loses his rider to the chalk; Corey Nakatani is an able sub and should be able to carve out a good trip.

Long Shot - 6 Ashley’s Bambino

Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds

2 The Admiral - After 2 tough beats will be looking to bust thru tonight; Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry, so caveat emptor.

5 Rough Passage - Been third twice, now gets Rafael Bejarano; odd to see him ride for Kristin Mulhall, and not either Baffert.

Long Shot - 9 Day of Fury

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $58,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up

6 Ambitious Brew - Has yet to run a poor race in a 5 race career; parking lot post can be an asset down the hill.

5 Somethings Unusual - Dead late closer is cutting back in distance; not a drop of speed, figures to come flying late.

Long Shot - 1 Rangi

Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 4-year-olds and up

8 The Cleaners - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claimer; speed to lead or follow close up.

7 Dehere Is Gone - FTS from the Bill Spawr barn; this is not a fast group, so a fresh face, unproven, is not yet a plug.

Long Shot - 6 Tasha’s Courage -

Best Bet - 2 The Admiral (race 6)

Santa Anita Park Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/6/$35.20; Long Shots, 7/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Park Totals - 226/77/$467.40; Long Shots, 114/15/$165.40; Best Bets, 14/8/$34.00

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #3 Bradester (3/1) in race 4 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Palace ran second at Aqueduct paying $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats - 13/8/$58.00; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
