Jilted fans rage about Findlay star

Jubilation over UNLV landing prized recruit Rashad Vaughn began almost immediately Tuesday afternoon after the Findlay Prep star announced his decision on national television.

Rebels fans were taking to social media and message boards to express their pleasure over the program landing its third top 40 recruit of this class. One fan even reported celebratory horn-honking around town to a sports radio show.

There was none of that in Ames, Iowa, or Chapel Hill, N.C.

Those were the towns that felt let down by Vaughn eschewing their beloved institutions in favor of UNLV.

North Carolina fans still thought they had a shot even though all reports indicated Vaughn was choosing between Iowa State and UNLV.

While being sad and upset about a recruiting loss is part of being a fan, things got a bit out of control Tuesday.

There were the usual insults hurled at Vaughn on Twitter. Many “fans” even felt the need to mention Vaughn in their obnoxious tweets so he would be sure to see what they had to say.

Some were relatively tame, such as the guy who said, “the Big 12 is for men, not little boys so the MWC will fit you well!” or the similar, “dude who is UNLV? you are an idiot for not coming to cyclone nation, good luck winning anything down at that school!” Then there were those that “complimented” Vaughn and the rest of the UNLV recruiting class, but used dollar signs for all the S’s.

Those are ridiculous enough, but things really took a turn.

Someone named Patrick Smith (@53smith) got right to his point.

“you are one dumb mother (expletive),” he posted.

Zach Loring (@TweetitbackZach) shared a similar sentiment.

“And one last.. (EXPLETIVE) YOU.”

Those were classy compared to tweets from the real losers of the day, Ryan Kenyon and Viraj Parimu.

Kenyon, an Iowa State fan, really seems to wish Vaughn well.

“I mean it was either Vegas or Ames. UNLV will underachieve as usual next year & every1 will b happy…Meanwhile Headbut a knife,” he posted from @RealGrandKenyon.

Yes, headbutt a knife. Seems like a reasonable reaction to someone announcing where they will play college basketball.

Not to be outdone, Tar Heels fan Parimu made sure to weigh in as well using a derogatory term for homosexuals.

“(Expletive) you Rashad Vaughn. UNLV over UNC? Great choice (expletive),” posted the brilliant @viraj_parimu94.

Stay classy, fellas.

 ■   FOLLOWING MANTI —  According to Michael Gehlken of UT San Diego, the agent for Missouri All-America defensive end Michael Sam, who announced Sunday that he is gay, said the Chargers would be a “great fit” for his client.

The franchise already went through the media circus that accompanied linebacker Manti Te’o last season and handled things quite well.

Please spare us the jokes and don’t comment on the fact that Sam is putting the possibility of moving to San Diego out there in hopes of relocating to a city where Navy guys are always running around in their uniforms.

That wouldn’t be funny.
