The UNLV women’s basketball team trailed by as many as 25 points before losing 79-63 to Fresno State on Wednesday in the Mountain West opener for both teams at Cox Pavilion.
Center Aley Rohde had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Rebels (3-10), and guard Mia Bell also scored 15 and had five steals, but she committed six of the team’s 25 turnovers. Guard Danielle Miller scored 13 but had five turnovers.
UNLV played the final 10 minutes of the first half without starters Rohde, Rejane Verin and Danielle Miller, who each picked up two fouls. They had scored 15 of the Lady Rebels’ first 17 points.
UNLV scored only 11 points the rest of the half, including two in the final five minutes, and trailed 43-28 at halftime.
The Lady Rebels cut the deficit to 48-37 with 14:50 remaining, but Fresno State scored nine straight points in the next 92 seconds to take control. The Bulldogs’ largest lead was 79-54 with 3:03 left.
Fresno State (7-5) shot 50.9 percent (29 of 57) from the field and hit 8 of 21 3-point attempts.
