A motor sports tripleheader in Southern Nevada starts today with an NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with nearly 500 teams expected to compete in the three-day event.
Competition includes Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars, and among the hottest entrants is Alexis DeJoria.
DeJoria, who earned her Nitro Funny Car license late last year at Las Vegas, will continue to drive her Top Alcohol Funny Car until moving up to the pro category this fall.
She drove her Stealth Motorsports methanol-fueled Funny Car to NHRA records two weeks ago in Gainesville, Fla., with a time of 5.446 seconds and top speed of 267.91 mph, although Frank Manzo reset both marks later in the event.
DeJoria, whose father, John Paul DeJoria, is a part-time Las Vegas resident, is seeking her first national event title and will get that chance in the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at LVMS from April 1 to 3.
Qualifying for the divisional race begins at 8 a.m. today.
