Nevada fishing report, May 28, 2015

LAKE MEAD — Memorial Day weekend brought many recreationists to the lake, anglers making up a significant portion of these. Early mornings were a good time to avoid the crowd as well as hook some of the lunkers seeking forage in the coves. Netted shad has been the most productive bait. A few anglers who were fishing from shore near Boulder Beach had success catching catfish using anchovies.

LAKE MOHAVE — Early morning has been a good time to be on the water for those seeking tight lines. Stripers are active beginning at grey light and anglers have had success working Rat-L-Traps and other crankbaits near coves. Largemouth and smallmouth bass have gone into post spawn mode and the action has slowed as a result. Anglers are still catching fish but are working a little harder for the bite. Worms fished on a drop shot and tubes are getting bites. Willow Beach is still giving up quality fish with stripers as large 19 pounds being caught during the past week. Shad imitations are fooling the fish.

LAUGHLIN — The striper bite is on for those anglers fishing in the area near Davis Dam. Anchovies are the bait of choice. The fish have been ranging from five to seven pounds. Lures in trout patterns often produce well. According to Rusty at Riviera Marina, one angler reeled in a 15-pound cat near Casino Row.

URBAN PONDS — Rough weather this past week has really messed with success rates on the ponds. Though many fish are seen in the water very few have taken baits or lures, but this is often common around storm fronts and normal conditions should return soon.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Recent thunderstorms across the area have made fishing difficult for the past several weeks. Storm activity is predicted to continue through Friday with various degrees of intensity. Fisherman launching boats in Haymeadow and Cold Springs are advised to stay close to the Northern edge of the cattails as the entry channel is shallow.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Despite the stormy conditions this past week, the park was full of people enjoying catching rainbow, tiger and brown trout. The hot lure over the weekend was a Mepp’s spinner in red and gold. The only bass of note was a 4.5-pound largemouth, caught by Vince Hollingsworth of Las Vegas using a black Woolly Bugger. He also caught and released many rainbows over the weekend.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Rainbow trout action has been great at the park for those using PowerBait or throwing spinning lures. Largemouth bass and crappie are still taking various lures and jigs throughout the lake.
