Rimmey heeds coach’s words

Canyon Springs coach Hunkie Cooper had ample reason to bench Deavin Rimmey after the first half of the Pioneers' season opener Friday.

Rimmey's two fumbles had been costly, but the coach rightly suspected his standout running back would bounce back.

After rushing for only 3 yards in the first half, Rimmey exploded to finish with 198 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, leading Canyon Springs to a 42-21 home victory over Green Valley.

"Rimmey is so competitive," Cooper said. "He was pressing and he made some early mistakes. But I put the ball back in his hands because I know the type of player he is."

Rimmey said he was inspired by Cooper's halftime lecture.

"Coach talked to us in the locker room," Rimmey said. "I decided to take off my gloves and go with the bare hands."

Rimmey held onto the ball for the rest of the game, Cooper still called it an ugly win.

"I'm pleased to be 1-0," said Cooper, whose team lost three fumbles, threw an interception and missed a short field goal. "But we don't want to win games this way."

The Gators (1-1) matched Canyon Springs' futility, losing three fumbles, throwing three interceptions and missing a field goal.

Despite the early problems, the Pioneers led 13-0 at halftime on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Ward to Leo Wills and a 14-yarder from Ward to Treyveon Evans.

Ward's 20-yard pass to Daveon Collins in the third quarter gave Canyon Springs a comfortable 20-0 lead.

Green Valley's Aaron Love scored on runs of 31 and 43 yards in the next 2:20 to cut the Gators' deficit to 20-14.

That's when Rimmey took over, answering with scoring runs of 43 yards late in the third and 54 in the fourth.

"I don't want to start with a bad game," he said. "I don't want my senior year to be horrible."

Gators quarterback Paul McKay dove for a 5-yard TD in the fourth.

Ward completed 11 of 22 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

Love led Green Valley with 128 yards on 17 carries.

• Bishop Gorman 50, Pahrump Valley 0 -- At Pahrump, freshman quarterback Jarrett Solomon threw three touchdown passes and the second-ranked Gaels (3-0, 2-0 Southwest League) held the Trojans (0-2, 0-2) to 90 yards of offense.

Solomon was 6-for-13 for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, when Gorman accumulated 350 yards of offense on 30 plays.

Victor Belen scored on an 85-yard run 35 seconds into the game and finished had 137 yards on five rushes by halftime.

Pahrump's best possession was a 60-yard drive that fizzled late in the first half.

• Legacy 56, Mojave 0 -- At Legacy, Deshae Edwards rushed for 231 yards, including touchdowns of 20, 74 and 76 yards, on 10 carries as the fifth-ranked Longhorns (3-0) shut out the Rattlers (0-2).

Legacy quarterback Devin Weidemann had two completions, both for touchdowns: 45 yards to Chris Lyle and 10 to Marcus McCollum.

Lyle scored on a 98-yard kickoff return to open the second half. Martell Crockett had a 60-yard run for Legacy's final touchdown.

Mojave running back Ronald Adams rushed for 78 yards.

• Silverado 41, Valley 0 -- At Valley, Terran Madu-Jules rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 7 Silverado's defense dominated the Vikings.

Madu-Jules scored twice on 2-yard runs in the first quarter and broke loose for a 64-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Tyler Anderson rushed for 83 yards and Steven Scamorza ran for two touchdowns as the Skyhawks (2-0) compiled 368 yards on the ground.

Valley (0-2) struggled to move the ball on the ground and in the air. Silverado intercepted Vikings quarterback Dean Wallace twice and sacked him twice.

Wallace led Valley with 58 yards rushing, and was 5 of 15 passing for 57 yards.

• Desert Pines 64, Western 16 -- At Western, Andrew Amado scored in the first minute on a 6-yard fumble return, helping the ninth-ranked Jaguars (2-1) pile up 43 points in the first half to beat the Warriors (1-1).

Desert Pines quarterback Dalton Leilua passed for 183 yards, including touchdowns of 40 and 37 yards to Eric Tuiloma. Backup Trey Robello threw a 6-yard TD to Paul Bennett.

Western was held to 56 yards, including Dante Warren's 25-yard TD pass to Aaron Buckley in the final minute. Brian Mikol also scored on a 90-yard punt return.

• Del Sol 28, Rancho 0 -- At Del Sol, the 10th-ranked Dragons (2-0) forced five turnovers, had three sacks and scored on a punt return while blanking the Rams (0-2).

Jason Meuir's 46-yard punt return lifted Del Sol's lead to 12-0 with 5:46 left in the first half.

An interception and 27-yard return by Ashton Cacho stopped Rancho's ensuing possession, and Del Sol's Dezerick Reed ran in from 3 yards on the next play.

Reed scored on an 85-yard fumble return in the third quarter, rushed for 95 yards on 18 carries and added a sack. Meuir made an interception, Kip Canyon and Evan Weinstock recovered fumbles.

Del Sol quarterback Troy Miller connected on 8 of 16 passes for 160 yards, all in the first half, including a 29-yard TD to Weinstock.

Mike Cruz rushed for 94 yards on 25 carries for Rancho and Brandon Pletsch passed for 97 yards in the second half on 5-for-10.

• Spring Valley 35, Sierra Vista 14 -- At Sierra Vista, the Grizzlies (2-1, 1-0 Southwest) won their second in a row, scoring on three long plays in the first half on their way to a 28-0 lead over the Mountain Lions (0-3, 0-2).

Anton Stallworth's 47-yard pass to Khoa Nguyen was the first of Spring Valley's big plays, capping a 65-yard possession.

The Grizzlies also scored in the first half on Jeremy Geary's 3-yard run, Taj Allen's 74-yard interception return and Brandon Lopez's 64-yard run. Geary's TD followed a fumble recovery.

The teams swapped touchdowns to begin the second half. Sierra Vista marched 74 yards in 10 plays, with Dontrell Hall running in from 5 yards, but Spring Valley's Sedale Lott answered with a 4-yard run to make it 35-7. Hall added a late TD on a 17-yard pass from Sedarion Campbell.

Lott led the Grizzlies' ground game with 66 yards. Lopez had 64 and Allen 62. For Sierra Vista, Dontrell Hall rushed for 150 yards on 11 carries and Johnathan Hall supplied 100 on 22 carries.

• Durango 30, Desert Oasis 20 -- At Durango, Julio Mora ran for 51 yards and three touchdowns, and the Trailblazers (2-1, 1-1 Southwest) squelched the Diamondbacks (1-1, 0-1) with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Durango led 21-7 at halftime, with Mora scoring on two 1-yard runs and Michael Mehling on a 37-yarder, set up by Donovan Smith's 33-yard punt return.

The Trailblazers stretched their lead to 30-14, with Mora running in from 19 yards and Anthony Ramirez kicking a 40-yard field goal. Mora's TD was set up by quarterback Greg McKinney's 42-yard keeper, while Gary House's fumble recovery led to the field goal.

For Desert Oasis, Ronald Hunt scored in the second half on a 2-yard run and a 24-yard reception from Brennen Stott, the latter with 1:37 to play.

Hunt also played a role in the Diamondbacks' first-half TD. He fielded a kickoff at his 1-yard line and handed off to Colin Maestas at the 20. Maestas raced the final 80 yards.

• Liberty 54, Chaparral 0 -- At Chaparral, the Patriots (1-1) dominated defensively, intercepting five passes and holding the Cowboys (0-2) to 82 yards.

Liberty converted three second-half turnovers into 21 points. Linebacker Samson Toalei and defensive back Anthony Morgan each made interceptions after Chaparral drove deep into Liberty territory.

Patriots freshman Niko Kapeli rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries and made two catches for 83 yards. Quarterback Samson Tai was 5 of 12 for 114 yards.

• Cheyenne 16, Shadow Ridge 10 -- At Cheyenne, Xavian Johnson returned a kickoff 85 yards for a tiebreaking touchdown as time expired, lifting the Desert Shields (1-2, 1-1 Northwest) over the Mustangs (0-2, 0-1).

Shadow Ridge tied the game at 10-all on Braden Williams' 30-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining. But Johnson took the ensuing kick, broke two tackles, dodged the kicker and ran for the touchdown.

Jordan Butler rushed for 104 yards for Cheyenne, including a 52-yard touchdown in the third quarter on a run down the left side. That gave the Desert Shields a 10-7 lead.

Shadow Ridge led 7-3 at halftime, powered by an 8-yard TD run by Zak Hill. Cheyenne got a 25-yard field goal by Isaiah Henry.

Cheyenne's Nchong Enokenwa had two sacks and Cordaryl Warren made an interception.

• Coronado 35, Eldorado 19 -- At Eldorado, Ryan Newton passed for 272 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 81 yards, leading the Cougars (2-0) past the Sundevils (0-3).

Newton connected with Cody Giordano for a 73-yard touchdown on the fourth play of the game. Devon Riley followed soon after with a 65-yard punt return TD.

Newton was 19 of 27, including a late TD to Garrett-Anthony Rowe. Giordano made five catches for 102 yards.

For Eldorado, junior JaQuorrey Williams scored on a 70-yard scramble in the fourth quarter. He finished with 90 yards rushing and 100 passing, including a fourth-quarter TD to Brett VanOrden.

Drayton Green scored for the Sundevils on a 1-yard run.

• Centennial 41, Faith Lutheran 31 -- At Faith Lutheran, Christopher Henderson passed for 262 yards and two touchdowns as the Bulldogs (1-2, 1-1 Northwest) rallied past the Crusaders (0-2, 0-2).

Henderson also rushed for 69 yards on 11 carries and made an interception to stop a late push by Faith Lutheran. The Crusaders led 31-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Faith Lutheran's Joe Portaro passed for 303 yards and three TDs. Don Pearson piled up 231 yard receiving and two scores. John Cartier had a go-ahead 88-yard kickoff return for the Crusaders in the third quarter.
