Bills can’t shake losing culture

Buffalo defensive tackle Marcell Dareus is an incredibly talented football player.

He gives coaching staffs around the NFL nightmares trying to prepare for his combination of size and athleticism on the line of scrimmage.

Unfortunately for the Bills, Dareus is currently spending most of his time haunting the sleep of his own coaches.

He was arrested in his native Alabama last month after a traffic stop led to the discovery of synthetic marijuana and drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.

Now, Dareus been sent home from the team’s voluntary practices after he was involved in a traffic accident in Hamburg, N.Y., near the team’s Orchard Park facilities.

Head coach Doug Marrone says Dareus is expected back for minicamp on June 17, but has been excused to deal with personal issues.

Dareus was charged with three misdemeanors in connection with the accident after it was determined he crashed his Jaguar while allegedly drag racing teammate Jerry Hughes.

Marrone expressed his support for Dareus in quotes published by USA Today.

“I just want to make sure that I’m clear that everyone understands that I believe in Marcell, and I will do everything I can to make sure that we can get him on the right track,” the coach said. “I’m going to do everything I can to help a 24-year-old man make better decisions.”

The 2011 first-round pick also sat out parts of Buffalo’s final two games last season for violating a team rule.

Of bigger concern for a franchise trying to break a culture of losing might be result of the drag race.

Even in a contest where two Bills players competed against each other, nobody was able to win.

Dareus should have had a clear advantage in his Jaguar against the Camaro Hughes was rolling.

But, of course, Dareus’s car followed a similar path as Scott Norwood’s ill-fated kick and veered right off the road.

It never ends with this team.
