Former 51s hurler Syndergaard makes history with his bat

LOS ANGELES — Noah Syndergaard made history with a pair of home runs in the New York Mets’ 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium.

Syndergaard became the first major league pitcher since 2007 and the first Mets pitcher to hit two home runs in one game since 1983 when he homered off of right-hander Kenta Maeda twice, including the go-ahead three-run home run in the fifth.

Micah Owens was the last major league pitcher to hit two home runs in a game and Walt Terrell last did it for the Mets at Wrigley Field.

In addition, Syndergaard (3-2) earned his first win on the mound since April 18 at Philadelphia, giving up two runs — both solo home runs — on six hits over eight innings, striking out six walking one.

Maeda (3-2), who failed to go at least six innings for the first time in his MLB career, was relieved by Chris Hatcher after allowing a single and a double to Lucas Duda and Neil Walker to begin the sixth. Hatcher aided Maeda’s cause when he got out of a bases-loaded jam, striking out Syndergaard and Curtis Granderson to end the sixth.

In his eighth major league start, Maeda allowed four earned runs on six hits, struck out three and walked two.

Jeurys Familia allowed one run in the ninth but made the save, his 12th of the season, to tie the league lead. Adrian Gonzalez led off the inning with a line drive to center field and was sent home two batters later on a groundout by Joc Pederson. Familia struck out Puig to end the game.

With two on and none out in the fifth, Syndergaard got ahold of Maeda’s slider on the outside corner and drove it deep to center field. Both home runs came off of Maeda, as he teed off on the first pitch he saw from the right-hander in the third inning, sending it over the right-field wall for a solo home run to put the Mets up 1-0.

It was the third home run this week for a Mets pitcher and the fifth RBI from a pitcher in this series. Bartolo Colon hit a home run in the series finale in San Diego and Steven Matz hit an RBI double against Los Angeles on Monday.

In the bottom of the third, Corey Seager hit a solo shot of his own to right field, his third of the season, tying the game at 1-1. Grandal broke the tie in the fourth inning with another first-pitch home run, sending Syndergaard’s fastball to the same place the other two landed.
