FSU dismisses freshman QB after video shows him punching woman

Florida State kicked freshman quarterback De’Andre Johnson off the team Monday night after prosecutors released surveillance video showing him hitting a woman in a bar.

Coach Jimbo Fisher announced the move in a press release.

Johnson, 19, surrendered to authorities on June 30 and was booked on a charge of misdemeanor battery and held on a $500 bond, a Leon County Sheriff’s Office spokesman confirmed.

The State Attorney’s Office in Tallahassee issued an arrest warrant for Johnson after reviewing evidence in the case, including the video.

The woman sustained facial injuries, including a black eye, during the incident at a West Tallahassee bar last month, state attorney Willie Meggs said.

Johnson, who enrolled in January, was suspended indefinitely from the football team prior to his dismissal Monday.

Prior to Fisher’s announcement Monday, Johnson’s attorney, Jose Baez, issued a statement that read: “While it is clear from the video that De’Andre Johnson was not the initial aggressor, his family wants to take the lead in helping him learn and grow from this experience. He is currently participating in community service, and faith-based programs focused on battered women, substance abuse, and the empowerment of children.

“De’Andre is extremely embarrassed by this situation and would like to express his heartfelt apologies to everyone, including those who were directly affected, Coach Fisher and his teammates, the entire Florida State University community, as well as his family and friends.”
