Today at Santa Anita: Jan. 18, 2014

TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK by Richard Eng

Post Time 12:30 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

4 Goldilocks - Exits a bullet workout and figures to show early speed; lot of quitters in here, so the early lead is important.

2 Evasive Charmer - Is claim proof, which has proven to be a strong handicapping angle; basically a free shot, and keep horse.

Long Shot - 6 Queen of the Hill

Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $35,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

5 Browsing - Taking a big class drop from MSW to maiden claiming; ran second twice for a price tag like today.

6 Moonlight Stroll - Many times the less starts the better at this bottom class rung; in debut, ran well in the late stages.

Long Shot - 7 Mudge

Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

5 Salsita - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Peter Miller barn keeps purring along.

6 Mia’s Storm - Was dull as the chalk in last; if she runs like her debut race, she has a puncher’s chance to beat these late.

Long Shot - 4 Shared Image

Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

6 Zuzu’s Petals - This was a predictable rider change as she was a twice beaten favorite; filly has ability, high ceiling.

3 Pearl de Vere - Her lone start in Arcadia, she won her MSW; may not have cared for Hollywood, we know she likes Santa Anita.

Long Shot - 1 Sidebar

Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

2 My Gi Gi - Class relief from the grade 1 Matriarch for this; butted heads with some of the best in distaff turf division.

8 Indecise - Ran like a short horse in last off an 11-month hiatus; no surprise if she is much sharper this afternoon.

Long Shot - 5 Hard to Resist

Race 6 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds

11 Midnight Dream - Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; this one takes the blinkers off and gets Mike Smith.

7 Faith Hope Love - Ran OK in a well bet debut; solid tandem of Craig Dollase and Rafael Bejarano, expect improvement.

Long Shot - 8 Zensational Beauty

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

6 As Rulers Go - That was an impressive late charge to win her MSW at Hollywood; anything close to that makes her tough today.

9 Famous Alice - Figures to be way overbet off her debut win; red flag for me is she was a vet scratch on Jan. 1.

Long Shot - 3 Reflected Love

Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles, $200,000 La Canada, Fillies, 4-year-olds

4 Fiftyshadesofhay - Was left with too much to do last time in the Bayakoa; she figures to be much tighter for this rematch.

5 Broken Sword - Could not have been ridden any better by Joel Rosario in last; does her best when gets out to a clear lead.

Long Shot - 2 Ondine

Race 9 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $32,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

7 Tangerine Tickle - Tiny edge in maybe the hardest race on the card; like outer post going down the hillside turf course.

3 Promiscuoussuances - Expect a strong speed effort from this one; aided a little by the turf rail out 8 feet.

Long Shot - 8 Four Better

Best Bet - 4 Fiftyshadesofhay (race 8)

Santa Anita Park Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$34.80; Long Shots, 8/1/$8.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Park Totals - 260/86/$521.40; Long Shots, 130/17/$180.80; Best Bets, 16/8/$34.00

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #3 Subtle (5/2) in race 11 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, My Pal Chrisy ran second at Gulfstream Park paying $2.80 to place and $2.20 to show. Stats - 15/10/$73.20; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
