UNLV basketball tumbles in national rankings

UNLV basketball's two road losses last week cost it in the national polls released today, with the Rebels falling from 11th to 21st in The Associated Press rankings and from 11th to 20th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' rankings.

The Rebels (22-6) lost Mountain West Conference games at Texas Christian, 102-97 in overtime on Tuesday, and at New Mexico, 65-45 on Saturday. UNLV hosts Boise State in a conference game on Wednesday.

New Mexico (22-4), which had been unranked in both polls, climbed into the national rankings today. The Lobos are No. 18 in the media poll and No. 21 in the coaches' poll. In addition to beating UNLV on Saturday, New Mexico also posted a 77-67 road victory at then-No. 13/15 San Diego State last week.

The Aztecs (20-6), which also lost last week at Air Force, dropped to 24th in this week's AP poll and 25th in the ESPN/USA Today poll.

The top five in the media poll are: Kentucky (26-1), Syracuse (27-1), Missouri (25-2), Kansas (22-5) and Duke (23-4). The coaches' top five: Kentucky, Syracuse, Missouri, Duke and Kansas.
