Ex-UNLV coach Rice visits New Mexico as consultant

Former UNLV basketball coach Dave Rice is spending time in Albuquerque watching New Mexico's practices.

He was invited by Lobos coach Craig Neal.

"As you know, the college basketball fraternity is a close one," Rice said Tuesday in a text message. "Many of my coaching friends and acquaintances have invited me out to visit them and their teams. It is great for me to go out to different programs, see coaches and how they go about their daily work. I get to learn, and they ask for my feedback and input as well. I have a number of trips planned and am doing so around my son, Travis' senior season at Bishop Gorman."

Neal told the Albuquerque Journal he didn't invite Rice to get extra insight into Lobos opponents.

"This has nothing to do with the league or anything like that," Neal said. "It's just me inviting a friend out for a couple days to look at how we do things and get his take on some of what we do. Same as we've done in the past with other coaches."

Rice was fired Jan. 10 by UNLV and replaced by Todd Simon, who is the team's interim coach.
