Four ex-Rebels sign baseball deals

Four former UNLV baseball players, including two who went undrafted, signed contracts with major league clubs.

Outfielder Joey Armstrong, who was drafted in the 10th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks, signed a deal worth $154,600. Right-hander Bryan Bonnell, a 36th-round pick, signed with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Catcher Erik VanMeetren (Washington Nationals) and right-hander Zack Hartman (Los Angeles Angels), who each went undrafted, also signed deals.

Only contractual details were available for Armstrong’s signing.

All four players are in the Rookie League.

Also, former Rebel Erick Fedde made his professional debut on Sunday, starting for the short-season Class A Auburn (N.Y.) Doubledays. Fedde had not playing since being drafted 18th overall by the Nationals in 2014 because of Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
