Wildfire smoke leads to high school sports cancellations

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association has canceled all state-sanctioned outdoor athletic activities in six Northern Nevada counties for this weekend.

Poor air quality due to smoke from the Yosemite wildfire forced the NIAA to cancel all soccer, cross country, tennis and golf events today and Saturday in Washoe, Douglas, Carson, Lyon, Storey and Churchill counties.

A handful of Las Vegas teams were scheduled to compete in a cross country invitational and soccer tournaments this weekend in the Reno area, but those events likely will not be rescheduled.

Schools do have the option of attempting to move contests outside of those areas. As a result, several Division I football games have been moved.

Carson and Hug will play in Lovelock. Douglas’ game at Reno has been moved to Winnemucca. McQueen was scheduled to host Nevada Union (Calif.), but instead will travel to Nevada Union.
