Junior Master Gardener program to hold open houses
July 12, 2014 - 5:00 am
The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Junior Master Gardener will host two open houses where children and their parents can view projects and collect information on the upcoming fall sessions that begin in September.
The first open house will be held in the south part of the valley Aug. 9 at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. The second open house will be held in the north part of the valley at the Research Center and Demonstration Orchard, 4600 Horse Road in North Las Vegas. Refreshments will be served at both locations.
Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Junior Master Gardener ambassadors will be available and attendees can experience a make-and-take project and tours of the children’s demonstration gardens. Registration for the fall sessions will be available at the open houses.
The Junior Master Gardener program is an international youth gardening program of the university cooperative Extension network. It engages children in novel, “hands-on” group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment and cultivate the mind. The program offers children leadership skills, service, safety with tools and community service.
The Junior Master Gardener program is open to all children ages 7-12. The eight-session per semester class fee is $52. Classes are held from 9 a.m. to noon every other Saturday.
In the north part of the valley, there are Saturday Junior Master Gardener classes at the Research Center &Demonstration Orchard beginning Sept. 6. In the south part of the valley, the Saturday Junior Master Gardener classes will be held at the Lifelong Learning Center’s Outdoor Education Center beginning Sept. 13.
