Student arrested after saying he shot a dinosaur

A South Carolina high school freshman was suspended and arrested after writing a story in class about shooting his neighbor’s pet dinosaur.

The assignment was to write a few sentences in the form of a “status” on Facebook. Sixteen-year-old Alex Stone said he wrote “I killed my neighbor’s pet dinosaur” in one status, and “I bought the gun to take care of the business” in another.

The teacher notified school officials of the use of the words “gun” and “take care of the business.” Officials suspended the teen and contacted police.

Police said Stone became “irate” and insisted it was a joke, but continued to be disruptive and was detained.

“The information that is being reported is grossly incorrect in reference to what led to the juvenile being charged,” Capt. Jon Rogers said in a Summeville police statement released on Thursday to WCSC.”The charges do not stem from anything involving a dinosaur or writing assignment, but the student’s conduct.”

Stone’s mother, Karen Gray, became outraged that the school didn’t contact her about the assignment. “I mean first of all, we don’t have dinosaurs anymore. Second of all, he’s not even old enough to buy a gun,” she told WCSC.

Stone recieved a one-week suspension and has hired a lawyer.

On Wednesday, his lawyer released this statement: “This is a perfect example of ‘political correctness’ that has exceeded the boundaries of common sense,” Attorney David Aylor said. “The arrest and suspension of my client is completely absurd and further erodes the confidence parents and taxpayers have in our teachers and administrators who are tasked with educating our children and preparing them for higher education or entering the work force.”
