A French bartender has been found guilty of manslaughter after a patron died from doing 56 shots during an October drinking contest.
Bartender Gilles Crepin, 47, was banned from working in bars for a year and given a four-month suspended jail sentence on Wednesday. Renaud Prudhomme, 56, died in the hospital the day after breaking the bar’s previous in-house shots record, which was displayed on a notice board at the bar.
Crepin has said it was a mistake to display the record, which may have encouraged Prudhomme to drink too much.
Unbeknownst to Crepin, Prudhomme suffered from respiratory problems and had a history of alcohol abuse, according to the Guardian.
Crepin’s lawyer plans to appeal the sentence, saying the ruling is an attempt to make an example out of his client.
