Class to help prepare women for natural childbirth

A 10-hour class on giving birth naturally is planned from 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 3, 10, 17 and 24 at CSN'€™s Henderson campus, 700 College Drive.

The interactive class, taught by a midwife, is set to cover coping with labor pain, avoiding discomfort during pregnancy, parenting for newborns and what to expect postpartum.

Early registration planned for Henderson Safekey, Teen Scene

The city of Henderson is offering early registration next month for the 2015-16 school year'€™s Safekey and Teen Scene programs.

The before- and after-school recreational enrichment programs are hosted by the city at all Henderson public elementary, middle and junior high schools.

Registration is set from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 11-13; 3 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14; 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 18-20; and 3 to 5:30 p.m. Aug 21. Registration sites are the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road; the Downtown Recreation Center, 105 W. Basic Road.; the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway; the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway; the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St.; and the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.

City government meetings scheduled

The Henderson City Council plans its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 4 inside the council chambers at City Hall, 240 S. Water St.

The city Parks and Recreation Board is set to meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 5. inside the council chambers conference room.

The Henderson Planning Commission is slated to meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 inside the council chambers.

Henderson names new city manager

City of Hendseron council members and Mayor Andy Hafen recently appointed Robert "€œBob"€ Murnane to be city manager.

Murnane, a licensed engineer, was chosen from a pool of six candidates. He began working for the city in 1996.

Recruitment was overseen by Ralph Andersen & Associates, a firm that specializes in the process. After candidates were narrowed down to six, each made a presentations to the council July 8 during a public meeting, outlining what their first 100 days as city manager would entail. Council members interviewed candidates July 9 in a second special public meeting.

Store collecting handbags for Dress for Success

Shoppers can donate used or new handbags through July 26 at all Brighton Collectibles locations valleywide to benefit Dress for Success Southern Nevada.

The fifth annual drive was scheduled to kick off July 17 at Brighton Collectibles at The District at Green Valley Ranch, 2235 Village Walk Drive. Those who donate will are to receive $25 off handbags costing between $100 and $150 and/or $50 off handbags priced at $150 or more.

The business hopes to collect 750 handbags, topping last year'€™s total of 500. The bags are set to be refurbished before being donated to Dress for Success.

The nonprofit Dress for Success provides professional clothing and accessories, including handbags, to disadvantaged women seeking to gain employment and achieve economic self-sufficiency.

Henderson seeks exhibitors for community expo

The city of Henderson Fire and Police departments are seeking businesses and nonprofits to exhibit in the Henderson Community Expo 2015-National Night Out, planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road.

Exhibitors should offer products and services to the community that promote health and wellness, crime and fire prevention and public safety. Interactive demonstrations and activities that appeal to all age groups are encouraged.

Registration costs $95 for business and $25 for nonprofits and includes a tent canopy, table and two chairs. The deadline is Sept. 24.

Military recognition banner program offers applications through Oct. 1

The city of Henderson is offering applications for its Military Recognition Banner Program through Oct. 1.

The street banners are set to display the names, ranks and photographs of active military members starting around Nov. 11. They will be displayed for one year.

Honorees must be a Henderson resident or an immediate family member of a Henderson resident and an active-duty member in good standing. Residents, businesses and organizations may nominate an honoree and sponsor a banner for $150.

All service members are set to be honored at a ceremony hosted by the city of Henderson once the display period is complete.

St. Rose Dominican set to preview new tower

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals are set to preview their new Siena Tower from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Siena campus, 3001 St. Rose Parkway. The event is set to include a farmers market, food trucks, activities, free health screenings, tours and raffles. Visit strosehospitals.org.

Valley Health System breaks ground on Henderson Hospital

The Valley Health System broke ground July 9 on a 142-bed hospital slated for construction at U.S. Highway 95 and Galleria Drive.

The $168 million facility, scheduled to open in fall 2016, is set to offer emergency care, surgical services, women'€™s and children'€™s services, cardiology and ancillary services.

The site is set to employ 700 people, with hiring planned through spring and summer 2016. The hospital is the Valley Health System'€™s sixth in the Las Vegas Valley.
