MOJAVE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER to attend CONFERENCE IN washington, d.c.

Mojave High School social studies teacher Averill Kelley is one of 32 teachers nationwide selected to attend C-SPAN Classroom’s 2013 Educators’ Conference July 11 in Washington, D.C.

The two-day conference is to educate teachers about how to use C-SPAN programming in their classrooms. Kelley and other teachers received airfare and accommodations from C-SPAN.

C-SPAN Classroom is a free service for teachers that provides videos, lesson plans and handouts. For more information, visit c-spanclassroom.org.

HOUSING SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
TO UNLV STUDENTS

Rebel Place, a student housing community near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas is to offer $300 housing scholarships to the next 25 students who lease for the fall 2013 school year. The furnished, two- to four-bedroom apartments start at $515 per month.

SUMMER GRADUATION CEREMONY PLANNED FOR AUGUST

The Clark County School District’s second annual summer graduation ceremony is scheduled at 9 a.m. Aug. 14 at the Las Vegas Academy Theatre, 315 S. Seventh St. The ceremony will honor students from around the district who met graduation requirements through summer school. More than 300 students received diplomas last summer.

FREE MEALS AVAILABLE FOR KIDS
DURING SUMMER

Clark County children can receive free meals during summer as part of the Summer Food Service Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There are 57 sites throughout the Las Vegas Valley serving lunch and breakfast to those 18 or younger. For more information or for the nearest site, call 866-348-6479.

TEACHERS CAN GET FREE ADMISSION
AT NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT

Teachers in Clark County can receive free admission to the “50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic” exhibit at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South, through July.

Teachers must show school ID at the Imagine Exhibitions Gallery box office. The exhibit is open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the last ticket sold at 6 p.m. General admission is $16. Locals, military personnel and seniors pay $13.

SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PROVIDE
SUMMER LESSONS ONLINE

The Clark County School District is offering online learning activities and resources for parents and students over the summer.

Families with students in 12th grade or younger can access grade-appropriate activities in math and reading at ccsd.net/district/summer-learning-guides.

The lessons are available in English or Spanish.

SHORT STORY CONTEST OPEN
TO YOUNG AUTHORS

Aspiring authors ages 14 to 22 can apply for a chance to have their work published as part of a compilation book to be sold on amazon.com.

Applications for the Gateway Arts Foundation’s Helen Hearne Literary Scholarship are being accepted through Aug. 1.

Applicants can submit a short story in fiction or nonfiction of 14,000 to 21,000 words. The story must have a theme or central focus of Nevada or any of its towns. Three award classifications will be given based on age.

FOUNDATION SEEKS EXCHANGE STUDENT HOST FAMILIES

The Face the World Foundation is registering volunteer host families for the fall semester of high school.

Host families provide a loving home, meals and a bed while learning firsthand about another culture and establishing friendships that will last a lifetime.

The nonprofit foundation provides a community representative for the host family and the student during his time in the United States.
