NLVPD WINS GRANT FUNDED GPS SYSTEMS
The North Las Vegas Police Department has won $5,000 in grant funds to replace nine global positioning devices, officials announced last month.
The equipment, purchased through the Limited Fixed Deliverables grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, is set to help police motorcycle units respond to calls quickly and safely without occupying valuable air time on the radio, according to a Dec. 28 police department release.
The new GPS units’ life expectancy is three years. Many of the department’s older units are more than five years old, and some are no longer operable.

AT&T LOOKS TO BOOST NORTH LAS VEGAS COVERAGE
AT&T has upgraded 16 cell sites in the Las Vegas Valley, including four in North Las Vegas. City residents and business owners can expect expanded mobile Internet coverage and faster connection speeds, according to a release issued Dec. 19.
The company poured about $110 million in statewide wireless and wired networks in the first half of 2013 and has spent more than $200 million on Southern Nevada’s wireless infrastructure since 2010.

SITES TO ACCEPT CHRISTMAS TREES FOR RECYCLING
The Southern Nevada Christmas Tree Recycling Committee is set to recycle Christmas trees at more than 20 locations across the valley.
The trees are set to be chipped into organic mulch for public gardens and parks. All nonorganic objects, including lights, tinsel and nails, should be removed before donation. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.
Last year, Southern Nevada residents recycled 15,000 trees.
Trees can be dropped off through Jan. 15 at the following locations: Aviary Park, 6750 Aviary Way; Cheyenne Sports Complex, 3500 E. Cheyenne Ave.; Craig Ranch Regional Park, 628 W. Craig Road; Lowe’s, 2570 E. Craig Road; Seastrand Park, 6330 Camino Eldorado Blvd.

GALAXY THEATRES COMPLETES UPGRADES AT THE CANNERY
Galaxy Theatres inside the Cannery, 2121 E. Craig Road, announced the completion of a final phase of luxury upgrades to its 14-auditorium theater last month.
The Las Vegas Valley’s second “Luxury+” theater is set to feature all-digital sound, 65-foot wall-to-ceiling projection screens and reserved, cushioned leather seating.
New theater food amenities include on-tap beer and wine, a gourmet sausage bar and power reclining seats with footrests.
