NORTH LAS VEGAS CITY WALK TO CHECK ON LOCAL BUSINESSES

North Las Vegas City Councilman Wade Wagner plans to tour area businesses on a City Walk set to begin 1 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Las Vegas Metro Chamber North Office, 3365 W. Craig Road, Suite 25. City Economic Development and Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce volunteers are to join the tour of businesses in Wagner’s Ward 4, which is scheduled to wrap up by 5 p.m.

“We want to give North Las Vegas businesses the best chance to succeed, so I’m looking forward to hearing directly from them on how we’re doing,” Wagner said. “I also want them to know we value their investment in North Las Vegas.”

MUNI GOLF COURSE SET TO REOPEN

The City of North Las Vegas Municipal Par 3 Golf Course, 324 E. Brooks Ave., will remain closed for overseeding through Oct. 13 but is set to reopen Oct. 14. Adults 18 to 59 can play nine holes for $8 Monday through Friday and $10 during prime time slots on evenings, weekends and holidays. Seniors can play the course for $7 during the week and $9 on weekends.

COUNCILWOMAN TO HOST READING RAINBOW IN THE PARK

Ward 2 North Las Vegas City Councilwoman Pamela A. Goynes-Brown plans to host a Reading Rainbow in the Park event at 11 a.m. Oct. 12 at Valley View Park, 2000 Bennett St.

The event, set to include free entertainment and food, books and games for kids and a family resource fair, will also feature prizes and giveaways courtesy of Rosie’s Wish, the Clark County School District and Love Life Family Services.

CHARITY GOLF TOURNEY TO BENEFIT THE SHADE TREE

The Southern Nevada Fleet Association plans to host Driving FORE Charity, a charity golf event to support area homeless nonprofit the Shade Tree, at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Aliante Golf Course, 3100 W. Elkhorn Road. Dinner and awards are scheduled to follow the event, which looks to feature a four-person scramble and other golf-based games.

AURELIO’S TO HOST ESSAY CONTEST

Aurelio’s Pizza looks to increase writing proficiency with its second annual Family Traditions Essay Contest, open through Oct. 15 to fourth-graders within a 10-mile radius of Aurelio’s location at 445 W. Craig Road.

The 300-word essay contest gives students the opportunity to interview their parents and grandparents and share their personal family traditions. Students can work on essays independently or as part of a classroom project.

Judging will take place between Oct. 16 and 31 and will be based on essay length, originality, appropriateness and reader enjoyment. Each participating student will be competing within his geographic region for three levels of prizes.

Master Gardeners offer weekly garden tours from 10 a.m. to noon Fridays beginning Oct. 4 at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Demonstration Gardens, 8050 Paradise Road.

Master Gardeners plan to offer free weekly walking tours aimed at teaching visitors about many of the more than 500 plants that grow in harsh southwestern desert landscapes around Las Vegas.

FORECLOSED UPON PETS TO CELEBRATE FIFTH YEAR WITH EVENT

Foreclosed Upon Pets Inc., a nonprofit animal rescue, plans to host its fifth-anniversary celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at a private home.

SAM’S TOWN TO LAUNCH HEALTH & WELLNESS EXPO

INTERTRIBAL VETERANS POW WOW SET FOR OCT. 26-27 AT SUNSET PARK

The ninth annual Las Vegas Intertribal Veterans Pow Wow is scheduled for noon Oct. 26 and 27 at Sunset Park’s Area 1, 2601 E. Sunset Road. The Pow Wow will honor veterans, both native and nonnative, through traditional tribal music, dancing and singing.

Admission is $5 per person, $3 for seniors, $10 per family and free for military personal and police officers.

LAS VEGAS ZOMBIE RUN TO RETURN TO SUNSET PARK OCT. 27

The 5K and 1-mile Zombie Run fundraiser is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 27 at Sunset Park, 2601 E. Sunset Road.

The trail run requires each runner to wear a flag football-style belt. Runners who make it through the course with any of their flags left will finish “alive.” If the zombies succeed in taking all of a runner’s flags, he will finish “undead.”

Volunteers 16 or older are invited to help during the event or to sign up as a zombie. Zombies must provide their own costumes.

Runners can sign up before Oct. 1 for $50 or by Oct. 18 for $60. The race will benefit the nonprofit Generation Vegas, which works to promote and improve education in the Las Vegas Valley.

DISCOUNTED MAMMOGRAM SCREENINGS PLANNED IN OCTOBER

BLM SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT

The Bureau of Land Management has asked the public to weigh in on the proposed sale of 440 acres of public land in 28 parcels across Clark County.

Funds generated by parcel sales would be used for park, trail and public land restoration projects around the state.

Written comments about the proposed sale should be mailed to the BLM Las Vegas Field Office, 4701 N. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130 by Oct. 28.

YOUTH NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM ACCEPTING GRANT APPLICATIONS

The city of Las Vegas’ annual Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program grant application process is open through Nov. 22. The program offers grants for up to $1,000 for youths to create and implement neighborhood-based service learning projects of their own design.

The program requires youths to match the city’s grant with cash, volunteer time or in-kind services and goods donated to the project. Projects are required to take place in city limits.

Nonprofit The Shakespeare Institute of Nevada has recently launched a series of acting workshops for Southern Nevada residents focusing on teaching students to try new material and prepare audition pieces while receiving feedback from professional actors and directors. The workshops are suitable for all ages and all acting levels and are planned from 10 am to noon Fridays and 6 to 9 pm. Saturdays at 7220 S. Cimarron Road.
