Palate-pleasing sushi menu on offer at Downtown Summerlin’s Andiron Steak & Sea

Andiron Steak & Sea, 1720 Festival Plaza Drive, in Downtown Summerlin, gives off a posh atmosphere while remaining inviting with western-facing floor-to-ceiling windows, billowy white curtains softening the Las Vegas sun and floral wallpaper accented by sage and white table settings. It’s a country-esque style that hints at Southern mansions, yet the food sets itself wholly apart, particularly the locale’s new sushi menu, crafted by chef Roy Villacrusis.

A recent tasting offered a look into Villacrusis’ versatility with flavors, such as the Big Eye Tuna (sashimi over watermelon salad in a shiso cucumber vinaigrette, $16); Fluke with halved cherry tomatoes and seaweed salad in a lychee vinaigrette ($14); Spicy Salmon with cucumber, daikon sprouts and crispy rice; and the Crispy Shrimp Roll with grilled pineapple, cucumber and avocado in a sweet soy sauce ($15).

While the flavors of some dishes — particularly the Hamachi with seaweed, crispy rice, yuzu ponzu and shiso ($17) — were sometimes startling, everything ultimately mingled well on the tongue in surprising fashion. Of note was the Diver Scallops with daikon sprouts, crispy roasted leeks, sliced strawberries and strawberry oil ($14). The leeks gave a surprise flash of roasted flavor, while the strawberries cooled it down, ending with a sweeter note — two flavors one would not expect to work instead meshing well over the buttery melting of raw scallops.

On the heavier side were the Bacon Jalapeno Churros with a white cheddar powder ($8); Crispy Artichokes in a Meyer lemon aioli, basil and esplette ($13); and the Crispy Calamari with pickled fresno and a miso chili dip ($14).

Desserts on the new menu run the range from Ashley’s Creme Brulee Donuts (the soft, doughy outside yielding to delectable cream inside, $7) to mini pies with housemade ice cream, which includes vanilla, orange cardamom, salted caramel, chocolate or amaretto ($6).

The wait staff is extremely attentive and whisks away empty plates in favor of making room on the table for upcoming dishes. And the drinks menu offers the refreshing and unique Fifty Shades of Earl Grey for those in favor of gin with Tanqueray gin, Earl Grey syrup and fresh lemon brut prosecco. Other cocktails, beer, wine and sake are also available.

Andiron is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Brunch is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Call 702-685-8002 or visit andironsteak.com.
