CONSTRUCTION TO SLOW TRAFFIC DURING CELTIC GATHERING, SCOUT EXPO

City of Las Vegas officials suggest residents use an alternate route if they plan to attend the Las Vegas Celtic Gathering & Highland Games on April 18 and 19 at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road, or the Mega Scout Expo from April 24-26 at the park.

Construction at Durango and Grand Teton drives is expected to slow traffic significantly. Residents are advised to take U.S. Highway 95 north, get off at Horse Drive, make a right on Fort Apache Road, make a right on Brent Lane and proceed to the park.

APRIL POOL’S DAY KICKS OFF DROWNING PREVENTION CAMPAIGN

The Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition’s annual drowning prevention and awareness campaign kicked off April 1 during an April Pool’s Day event at the city of Las Vegas Garside Pool, 250 S. Torrey Pines Drive.

Clark County and North Las Vegas firefighters distributed drowning prevention materials to area homes in conjunction with the event.

Coalition partners include Las Vegas Fire & Rescue; the North Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City fire departments; Clark County’s building and parks and recreation departments; area pool builders and supply companies; Safe Kids Clark County; the Southern Nevada Health District; and the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada. In Henderson, meanwhile, an April 8 event at the Henderson Multigenerational Center pool, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway, kicked off the Safe Pools Rule! campaign. APPS ALLOW DOWNTOWN VISITORS TO ADD TIME TO METERS

People using street parking or city of Las Vegas parking lots in downtown Las Vegas can now use their cellphones to add time to meters.

Those using street parking can download the Parkmobile app at tinyurl.com/lvparkmobile, and those using parking lots can download the PassportParking app at tinyurl.com/lvpassportparking.

The apps send reminders when visitors’ meter time is about to expire. They also allow users to download their parking receipts.

The parking lots included in the program are: the Gold Spike Lot, 208 Las Vegas Blvd. North; the Carson Lot, 200 Las Vegas Blvd. South; the Matlock Lot, 408 E. Clark Ave.; the DTC Lot, 300 N. Casino Center Blvd.; the Downtowner Lot, 108 N. Eighth St.; the Container Park Lot, 146 S. Seventh St.; the Llama Lot, 900 Fremont St.; and the Symphony Park Lot, 850 W. Clark Ave.

The city has also reduced on-street metered parking by 91 spaces to increase free parking options downtown.

FREE SHREDDING EVENT PLANNED IN WARD 3

A free Ward 3 Document Shredding Event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon April 18 at the Huntridge Theater parking lot, 1200 E. Charleston Blvd.

The limit is five boxes of documents per vehicle.

HENDERSON FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES ACCREDITATION

The Henderson Fire Department recently received accredited status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International following a voluntary self-assessment.

A peer assessment team conducted an on-site review of the department in December and unanimously recommended renewal for accredited agency status. The department has held the status since 1999.

The assessment team’s final report highlighted several areas that exceeded industry best practices, including response programs, integrated emergency preparedness systems, public education and risk reduction programs and arrest and conviction rates for arson.

HENDERSON SEEKS TO HIRE POLICE AND CORRECTIONS OFFICERS

The Henderson Police Department is accepting applications through 5:30 p.m. July 10 for police and corrections officers.

Applicants must be age 21 and a U.S. citizen by the date of the written exam; have a high school diploma or equivalent; and have no felony or domestic violence convictions. Candidates do not have to be Henderson residents to apply.

CSN SAFE ZONES TO BE DESIGNATED FOR LGBTQ STUDENTS

The College of Southern Nevada recently launched a Safe Zone program for LGBTQ students at the school.

The program aims to promote a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ individuals and educate and promote understanding, appreciation and respect for everyone.

The program includes special training for CSN faculty and staff members and the identification of Safe Zones throughout CSN’s campuses. The zones will be identified by stickers placed in conspicuous areas.

The spaces are to provide judgment-free areas for students to visit with faculty and staff members who have gone through the training. Information about pertinent resources in the community also will be available.

UPGRADES ON CHARLESTON BOULEVARD DOWNTOWN TO LAST THREE MONTHS

The construction of median islands along Charleston Boulevard between Sixth and 11th streets is set to last three months and cause minor traffic delays, the city of Las Vegas announced.

The $700,000 project also is set to include a new pedestrian crosswalk with a solar-powered flashing beacon at 11th Street. Three of the median islands are slated to be landscaped with trees and shrubs, and one median island will feature decorative rock.

The improvements are planned primarily from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Work is expected to be completed by June.

HENDERSON PLANS JOB FAIR FOR WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR, LIFEGUARD POSITIONS

A summer aquatics job fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 18 at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway, the city announced.

The fair is set to provide people 16 or older with information about lifeguard and water safety instructor job opportunities. The seasonal, part-time positions support the city’s 11 aquatic facilities and hundreds of Learn-to-Swim classes and events.

Candidates can apply at cityofhenderson.com before attending the fair so interviews can be scheduled during the event. Applicants should bring copies of their lifeguard or water safety instructor certifications and be prepared to take part in a water skills test. Applicants younger than 18 must have a parent present.

Those interested in lifeguard positions who have not earned their certifications will receive information about the American Red Cross lifeguard training program, hosted at the city’s pools year-round.

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU PLANS FREE SHREDDING AND RECYCLING EVENT

A free shredding and recycling event is scheduled from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 18 at the Better Business Bureau, 6040 S. Jones Blvd.

Materials to be accepted include cardboard, plastic, aluminum, wood and metal. Old cellphones also are slated to be accepted for recycling.

Participants can bring nonperishable food items or money to be donated to Three Square.

INTERNATIONAL TOURISM SAFETY CONFERENCE PLANNED

The 22nd International Tourism Safety Conference is scheduled for April 26-29 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, 3150 Paradise Road.

The event is for safety and security officials in the travel and tourism industries and focuses on providing new information, trends, equipment, strategies and best practices for keeping visitors safe.

Guest speakers from Clark County and around the globe are set to offer presentations addressing the state of tourism security, global terrorism, human trafficking, workplace violence, pandemic health issues, nightclub security, community policing and more. A Tourism Oriented Policing and Protective Services certification course also is slated to be offered.

The conference’s hosts are the International Tourism Safety Association, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Metropolitan Police Department and the Las Vegas Security Chiefs Association.

BOOTH TO OFFER INFORMATION ON DEALING WITH DISASTERS

The city of Henderson Office of Emergency Management plans to man an information booth dealing with disaster preparedness from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 16 at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road.

The booth is set to include information on preparing an emergency supply kit, developing a disaster-response plan and staying informed.
