1. Blick Art Materials grand opening:Blick Art Materials plans to host a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting for its new retail store at 6300 W. Charleston Blvd. at 9 a.m. Aug. 27. The first 100 guests will receive a gift tote filled with premium art supplies. Blick is also donating $500 to local art organization Push Forward Skateboarding of the Metro Arts Council of Southern Nevada, which works with at-risk youths through art and skateboarding programs. "Be the Dinosaur: Life in the Cretaceous": The exhibit is scheduled to visit through Sept. 20 at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd. Displays include an animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex and triceratops, interactive video games and a dino bone dig. The attraction is also scheduled to offer a 30-minute live animal show titled "Eat or Be Eaten: Predators and Prey" at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Aug. 29 and 30. The show is set to feature Springs Preserve zoologists and staff members with a rotating cast of animals, including bugs, lizards, snakes and small mammals. Audience members can participate in trivia games. A behind-the-scenes tour, offering a chance to get up close with the animals, is planned from noon to 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Mount Charleston night hike: A night hike is planned from 8 to 9 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Spring Mountain Visitor Gateway, 2750 Kyle Canyon Road on Mount Charleston. Experience the Spring Mountains after dark and put your senses to the test to learn about the adaptations of nocturnal animals. Cosmopolitan art exhibit: The P3Studio artist-in-residence Brent Sommerhauser's exhibit is set for viewing through Sept. 13 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, 3708 Las Vegas Blvd. South, from 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and 6 to 11 p.m. Sundays. Sommerhauser plans to introduce guests to kiln-formed glass, demonstrating the process of working with it and allowing them to create small sketches in glass by layering color combinations of glass powder, glass strings and other glass elements over Bullseye handmade glass tiles that Sommerhauser will fire in his Olympic glass kilns. The resulting tiles will be photographed and shared on his Instagram account @P3ArtGlass. Then, the tiles will be combined to contribute to a growing work that will serve as a record of those who participated, filling P3Studio with light, color and pattern.
