DJS FOR PJS TO HOST PAJAMA FUN RUN APRIL 19

The nonprofit DJs for PJs plans to host its inaugural Pajama Fun Run at 8 a.m. April 19 at the Kellogg Zaher Sports Complex, 7901 W. Washington Ave. A 5K run and 1-mile walk are planned to raise funds and collect children’s pajamas for the cause, which provides new pajamas to Southern Nevada youths in crisis situations. Local disc jockeys will be stationed throughout the race course to broadcast the event live.

SINGLES TRAVEL AND SOCIAL CLUB TO MEET APRIL 22

The Las Vegas Singles Travel and Social Club plans to meet at 7 p.m. April 22 at the Tap House, 5589 W. Charleston Blvd. A half hour of social time is planned prior to the meeting. Judy Davis is scheduled to speak about Friendship Force, an economical way to travel abroad and make new friends.

The Spring Valley Town Advisory Board is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. April 22 at the Desert Breeze Community Center, 8275 Spring Mountain Road.

SPIEDINI TO HOST SPRING VALLEY REPUBLICAN WOMEN APRIL 24

The Spring Valley Republican Women plan to meet at 11 a.m. April 24 at Spiedini in the JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. Sheriff candidate Larry Burns and Robin Joyce of the committee to bring the Republican National Convention to Las Vegas are set to speak.

REI PLANS BIKE MAINTENANCE, BACKPACKING CLASSES

A hands-on bike maintenance-trail/roadside repair class is planned from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 26 at REI in Boca Park, 710 S. Rampart Blvd.

Instructors will share tips and tricks for dealing with repairs on the go. Participants are asked to bring a bike in good working order and closed-toe shoes.

Class size is limited. Replacement parts are not included in the class fee of $45 for members and $65 for nonmembers.

Also at REI Boca Park, a backpacking basics class is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 29, including an overview of planning, preparation and gear. Participants can learn how to choose a pack, select proper clothing and footwear. Also, attendees will receive tips on trail etiquette and “leave-no-trace” principles.

CARDBOARD BOX CITY TO RAISE AWARENESS OF HOMELESS POPULATION APRIL 26

Family Promise of Las Vegas plans to host its Cardboard Box City 2014 event from 6-8 p.m. p.m. April 26 at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 6670 W. Cheyenne Ave.

To participate, attendees are asked to spend the night in a cardboard box. The goal is to raise awareness and money for homeless children and families in Clark County.

This year’s goal is $30,000. All donations remain in Clark County and benefit programs provided by Family Promise.

TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM TO HOST HOLOCAUST SPEAKER APRIL 29

Dr. Jeffrey Kaiser, a well-known public speaker in universities, synagogues and in the Israel Defense Forces, is slated to present his “From Holocaust to Sunshine” story at 1:30 p.m. April 29 at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane.

Convinced that he and his son could not be the only blood relatives remaining with his family’s last name, he set out to find what happened to his family that disappeared in the Holocaust.

FALLEN HEROES 5/10K RUN AND 1-MILE FUN WALK SET FOR MAY 17

The Douglas J. Green Memorial Foundation’s Fallen Heroes 5/10K run and 1-mile fun walk is set for 8:15 a.m. May 17 at Bruce Trent Park, 8851 Vegas Drive.

The foundation provides comfort and support to service members and their families with care packages during their deployments.

PHASE THREE OF BONANZA TRAIL OPENS AT BRIARE FAMILY PARK

Phase three of the Bonanza Trail project is complete at Bill Briare Family Park, 650 N. Tenaya Way.

The project includes a new trailhead, a large picnic pavilion, bathroom facilities and new lighting along the Bonanza Trail between Lorenzi Street and Jones Boulevard.

Earlier work connected the park to the Kellogg Zaher Sports Complex. The city’s goal is to construct a 239-mile trail network interconnecting the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, the outlying northwest and west areas through downtown Las Vegas to the mature east Las Vegas neighborhoods.

Phase three was a $1.5 million project funded by the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act and the State of Nevada Division of State Parks and Recreation.

NONPROFIT DONATES COMPUTERS TO ACTIONRED

Nonprofit Computers4cause has donated two desktop computers to ActionRED.

ActionRED is a nonprofit that looks to improve the lives of disenfranchised individuals living with HIV/AIDS. It had been operating with two old computers shared between five staff members. After one broke down, it was taken to Simple Computer Repair fto be fixed. Simple Computer Repair founder Jim Brock put it in touch with Computers4cause.

Computers4cause refurbishes working desktops, laptops, keyboards, flat-screen monitors and mice by wiping the hard drives, restoring them to factory settings and giving them to organizations in need. In the last three years, recipients have included low-income families, single parents, shelters, church groups and teen and support groups.

WOMEN’S CLUB OF SUMMERLIN SEEKS GRANT APPLICANTS

The Women’s Club of Summerlin is accepting applications for its Dare to Dream grant. Each year the organization awards the grants to women working to improve their lives and the lives of others in the community. The money can be used for assistance with educational opportunities, new skills development, business development, tuition or anything a woman can dream of that will help her move toward her goal.

Grants of up to $3,000 are awarded based on the impact the grant will have on the recipient and others in the community, the merit of the requested program or project and personal need. Applicants must be 21 or older and Las Vegas Valley residents.

VETERANS INVITED TO COMPETE FOR STARTUP MONEY

Military veterans with entrepreneurial aspirations can compete for business startup money. Signal 88 Security’s contest, Operation American Dream, is in its second year, providing veterans with an opportunity for success.

Through May 15, Army and Air Force veterans can submit a video explaining why they want to open their own business. Submissions will be accepted at signal88.com/operationamericandream.

Marine and Navy veterans are slated to get their chance in October.

The winning submission will be decided through a public vote on Signal 88 Security’s Facebook page on May 22. The contestant with the most votes will receive $5,000 to start his own business or $10,000 if he chooses to open a Signal 88 Security franchise.
