CAMPGROUND CLOSED FOR SUMMER
AT RED ROCK CANYON

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area’s developed campground, Red Rock Campground, is closed until Aug. 30 during the low-usage period. It is located within Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area approximately two miles east of the Visitor Center on state Route 159 (West Charleston Boulevard) and is the only developed campground within the conservation area.

Camping is allowed on Bureau of Land Management-managed public land outside of the Las Vegas Valley for up to two weeks without charge. Popular primitive (no facilities) sites include Bitter Spring Back Country Byway, Gold Butte Back Country Byway, Knob Hill, Virgin Mountains, Christmas Tree Pass and Logandale Trails System.

Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of other camping opportunities nearby which include: back country camping at Red Rock Canyon with permit, 702-515-5050; Valley of Fire State Park, 702-397-2088; Lake Mead National Recreation Area, 702-293-8990 or 702-293-8906; Death Valley National Park, 760-786-3200. RACE PLANNED AT WET ‘N’ WILD

The Soggy Jog race is planned to start 8 a.m. July 27 at the Wet ‘n’ Wild water park, 7055 S. Fort Apache Road. The entry fee is $70 and includes race entry, admission to the waterpark for the duration of the day, a Soggy Jog towel and swimming goggles.

REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR SPORTS
AND RECREATION PROGRAMS

The North Las Vegas recreation division’s activity schedule of classes, sports and recreation programs is available.

Registration can be conducted online at cityofnorthlasvegas.com or in person at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, and the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St. A list of offerings is available on the website.

The city’s recreation division offers a variety of affordable activities for adults and children, including personal training at the gym, adult and child dance classes, gymnastics, ceramics and martial arts.

Each of the programs encourages healthy exercise and social activities.

NEW A.G.E. EVENTS FOR THOSE
WITH DISABILITIES PLANNED

New A.G.E. for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is set from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence.

The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

NBA SUMMER LEAGUE SCHEDULED JULY 12-22

The NBA Summer League 2013 is set to feature 22 teams competing in a 61-game schedule from July 12-22 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion at UNLV, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

This summer’s event is to feature the debut of a tournament-style schedule that will crown the first NBA Summer League champion July 22. Teams are to compete in three preliminary-round games from July 12-16 before being seeded in a tournament running through the championship game on July 22. Each team is guaranteed to play at least five games.

NBA TV will televise a full slate of NBA Summer League games, and live game action will also extend across digital platforms.

The 2013 summer league is to open with the debut of the New Orleans Pelicans when they face the New York Knicks at 1 p.m. July 12. The Cleveland Cavaliers, who selected UNLV’s Anthony Bennett with the pick in this year’s NBA draft, will tip off their Summer League competition at 7 p.m. July 12 against the Los Angeles Lakers.

USA BASKETBALL CAMP PLANNED AT UNLV

The inaugural USA Basketball Fantasy Camp is planned July 23-25 at UNLV’s Mendenhall Center, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

Many big names in coaching are to be on hand to give the basketball enthusiast the opportunity to experience being a member of the USA national team. Participants are to have three days of on-court action and receive hands-on instruction and coaching from Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, Kentucky’s John Calipari, Florida’s Billy Donovan, Gonzaga’s Mark Few, Miami’s Jim Larrañaga, Grand Canyon’s Dan Majerle, Washington’s Lorenzo Romar, Villanova’s Jay Wright and camp director P.J. Carlesimo.

Off the court, fantasy guests will have the opportunity to attend networking and social functions each evening with USA Basketball players and special guests. Participants will also receive an exclusive USA Basketball Nike apparel and footwear package.

Fantasy Camp registrants must be 35 or older to participate. Rooms, meals and ground transportation will be provided as part of the event.

NONPROFIT PLANS MOUNTAIN GETAWAY
FOR DISADVANTAGED YOUTHS, ADULTS

The nonprofit Torino Foundation invites hundreds of disadvantaged children each summer to its Torino Ranch, where kids can experience summer camp through specialized programs under medical supervision, ensuring that each person gets the chance to have fun and make friends while gaining lifelong memories. Torino Foundation now offers camp experiences to teens and adults who were not able to have the chance in their youth. Every camp is residential, coed and free to the participants.

The camps planned for 2013 are:

n Camp Heart & Sole: July 11-14: a camp designed for children ages 6 to 17 who are at risk of developing heart problems and would benefit from connecting with other young people who may share similar health, emotional and physical challenges.

n Camp Cartwheel: July 17-20 (session 1) July 24-27 (session 2): an outdoor four-night camp experience designed to help children ages 5 to 17 with cancer or other critical illnesses as well as their siblings overcome the physical, mental and emotional obstacles posed by childhood disease.

n Camp TLC: Aug. 1-4: A residential summer camp program designed specifically for children ages 6 to 17 with a primary diagnosis of autism.

n Camp Some More: Aug. 9-11: a camp designed for the mothers and children of The Shade Tree, an organization helping those affected by domestic violence.

MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is looking for volunteer counselors and medical professionals to care for youngsters with muscular dystrophy and related diseases at the Southern Nevada MDA Summer Camp, from Aug. 4-10 at Apple Canyon Center in Mountain Center, Calif.

Volunteer counselors must be at least 16 years old. Campers’ ages range from 6 to 17. Each counselor is a companion to an MDA camper, helping with camp activities (sports, horseback riding, arts and crafts, etc.) and day-to-day activities (eating, bathing and dressing).

The association also is seeking physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, physical therapists and other medical professionals to volunteer for the camp’s medical staff. Medical staff members supervise and maintain the health and well-being of all camp participants.

RAINBOW YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE SIGN-UPS UNDER WAY

SIGN UP FOR SUMMER CAMPS

The city of Las Vegas invites parents to enroll children in summer day camp programs at six area community centers. Open registration is ongoing at several locations until the camps are full.

Registration must be done in person. All locations will have limited enrollment. Contact each location for details.

Summer camps are scheduled for 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Age-appropriate activities, including field trips, sports, special events, physical fitness and games, arts and crafts and nutrition training are planned under the supervision of trained staff members.

The following locations will offer summer camps, priced at $75 per child for the week and $70 for additional children in the family:

n Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road, 702-229-1607, ages 6 to 11. Camp ends Aug. 23.

Two community centers plan to offer themed weeklong specialty camps with additional activities, cooking and/or field trips. Participants will enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. SHRINERS golf tournament
PLANNED FOR OCTOBER AT TPC summerlin

The 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament is planned for Oct. 14-20 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is an official PGA Tour event. The 2013 tournament is set to feature more than 130 PGA Tour professionals competing for a $6 million purse, with a winner’s share of $1,080,000. All proceeds will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The event’s fourth annual Women’s Day luncheon, Kick Off Your Heels, is planned for Oct. 15. It will be catered and feature a guest speaker. Tickets are $125 per guest. The luncheon sold out in 2012, so early purchases are encouraged.

HUMANA GUIDANCE CENTERS SPONSOR WALKING GROUPS

Humana Guidance Centers are offering free walking groups led by a certified personal trainer. The program aims to positively affect seniors’ health by motivating and engaging them to take action and improve their fitness level and mental outlook by learning the proper walking and stretching techniques.

Participants will receive a free pedometer and at the end of each outing can upload their steps at a Guidance Center computer kiosk or at home to tracks steps taken, distance and calories burned.

SUMMER RECREATION EVENTS OPEN

The Dula Gym’s Summer Open Recreation for youths and teens ages 10-18 is set to be open noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at 441 E. Bonanza Road. Youths can attend Fridays and Saturdays when the gym is available. The recreation periods include open gym and weekly competitions in games and sports and are free with RecPass for participants 18 or younger with parent/guardian approval.

The event begins with a 1.5-mile run starting at the pool and winding through Veterans Memorial Park. The race will conclude with a 300-meter swim.
