First Friday arts calendar, May 6, 2016 — PHOTOS

The First Friday arts festival is scheduled from 5 to 11 p.m. May 6 at venues throughout the 18b Arts District in downtown Las Vegas, near the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Main Street. Live entertainment, artists’ booths, food vendors and more are planned. Admission is free. On-street and paid parking is available close to the event, but spaces fill up early. Visitors are cautioned to avoid parking in unauthorized parking areas, such as vacant lots as they may be subject to towing.

The event is set to include artists, the artisan bazaar, food trucks, music, live painting, and a farmers market curated by The Intuitive Forager. The theme for May is “Art through the Ages,” including five artists live painting in costume and in the style of historic artists such as Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh. The event is also set to feature Art Beyond the Paintbrush, a group of artisans including weavers, scribes, carvers and quilters interacting with the crowd.

The Chicano Arts Festival is set to happen on the 18 Guerilla Kages, free-standing structures constructed and curated by artist Ruzo Logic.

City of the World and Gypsy Den will join in celebrating the history of First Friday art on Colorado Boulevard at the corner of Casino Center Boulevard.

Cowabunga Bay is set to be on hand with special First Friday summer offers and information on the First Friday Foundation Beach Party scheduled from 6 to 11 p.m. May 27 at Cowabunga Bay in Henderson. Dignity Health is set to share samples of homemade bread from Dignity Health Hospitals.

The First Friday Foundation will post updates on scheduled First Friday events and other programming through its social media channels on Facebook at facebook.com/firstfridaylasvegas and Twitter @FirstFridayLV. The new website, firstfridaylasvegas.com, is active, and applications for artists and vendors are being accepted for the June event.

Preview Thursday is set from 6 to 9 p.m. May 5 and offers a more low-key event. The preview presents an opportunity to see many of the galleries and shows before the crowds on Friday.
