Clearer skies, small chance of rain for Las Vegas Valley

Smoke and haze from California wildfires had mostly cleared from Las Vegas Valley skies on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologist Chad Shafer said air conditions were better Thursday.

The Clark County Department of Air Quality issued a smoke and ozone advisory lasting through Friday. The department had forecast moderate levels of ozone and smoke which could be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The Blue Cut Fire started Tuesday morning, and as of Thursday night, the fire had spread to nearly 36,000 acres.

Thursday saw a high of 104 degrees, Shafer said. Temperatures are forecast to cool over the weekend, with a high of 103 expected on Friday, 101 on Saturday and 97 on Sunday.

Part of Henderson and Boulder City saw some rain Thursday, Shafer said. McCarran International Airport reported .08 of an inch of rain Thursday, Shafer said.

A 10 percent chance of rain is forecast Friday and Saturday, with the chance of rain going up on Sunday through Tuesday, Shafer said. The rain assists in removing the haze over the valley, and it helps improve the air quality, he said. With rain also comes cooler temperatures, and the valley will see below average temperatures in the beginning of next week, the weather service said.
