Rain and cold temps on the way to the Las Vegas Valley

Warm weather will give way to rain and cooler temperatures this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The overnight low from Friday was 44 degrees. The high for Saturday is expected to reach 70 degrees, which represents a temperature 10 degrees above average, the weather service said.

Going into Sunday, the overnight low is expected to once again be 44 degrees, which is expected to turn into a high of 56 degrees Sunday. The high on Monday is expected to fall back to 48 degrees, National Weather Service meteorologist Caleb Steele said.

Temperature fluctuations of this nature are not uncommon this time of year "when we get these kinds of systems," Steele said.

Although rain is not expected Saturday, the chances for rain increase considerably on Sunday, with a 60 percent chance beginning in the afternoon and increasing to 80 percent in the evening, Steele said.

Snow is forecast to fall in the mountains this weekend, with Mount Charleston expected to receive a total of 6 to 12 inches of snow, Steele said.

Saturday will likely remain mostly cloudy. Wind speeds are expected to be about 20 mph for most of Saturday, but some sections of the valley could see higher gusts, Steele said. Areas of Interstate-15 heading towards California may experience gusts up to 50 mph, which may create dusty road conditions due to a lack of rain in the area, Steele said.
