WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy has the legal authority to terminate the Yucca Mountain program over the protests of lawmakers who say DOE needs further permission from Congress, according to Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

LOS ANGELES — Chaz Bono is asking a judge to formally change his name and gender. The 41-year-old writer, activist and reality-TV star, was born a girl to Sonny Bono and Cher. He filed a petition to change his name and gender last week. Bono’s doctor filed a declaration with the court indicating he performed a gender-change operation last year. Formerly called Chastity, Bono has called the gender change “the best decision I’ve ever made.”
Attorneys for Amber Candelaria have filed an appeal with the Nevada Supreme Court, which seeks to have the Las Vegas justice of the peace candidate’s name on the ballot after a judge ruled that she was ineligible.

Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet computer hits U.S. shelves on Saturday, but fans who want the new touch-screen gadget shipped directly to them must wait a week. The company began taking preorders for the iPad on March 12, promising to get the device to eager buyers by its store launch date of April 3rd. Customers who placed pre-orders by March 27 will receive the device by that date, where Saturday delivery is available, but Apple said Sunday that new pre-orders won’t be shipped out until April 12.
