A new law gives the governor the authority to appoint the state superintendent of schools. Previously, the position was filled by the State Board of Education.

St. Patrick’s Day is to the local Irish pub what New Year’s Eve is to the Strip nightclub: Craziness. Pandemonium. Long lines and lots of intoxicated fun. March 17 has become a major holiday for some venues, drawing their biggest crowds of the year from Henderson to Summerlin, and from the Strip to downtown Las Vegas. Some are even family friendly.

Romance novelists will talk about their genre and craft

Las Vegas’ already considerable romance quotient will rise Saturday when seven romance authors come to town for “The Romance of Words,” a reading, book signing and discussion sponsored by the Vegas Valley Book Festival at the Chapel of the Flowers.

In a story Wednesday on the arrest of Danielle Slaughter in the killing of her daughter, the Associated Press reported that Las Vegas police thought the mother was suffering from sleep-deprivation and “may have been affected by the weight-loss product she had been taking.”
