Wranglers snap two-game losing streak

The Las Vegas Wranglers built a 5-1 third-period lead, then held off a late rally by Colorado to defeat the Eagles, 5-3, Wednesday in Loveland, Colo., to snap a two-game losing streak.

The win, highlighted by Adam Hughesman’s first two goals of the season, moved Las Vegas (6-9) into third place in the ECHL Pacific Division. Hughesman scored 38 seconds into the game and Cody Purves made it 2-0 with 49 seconds remaining in the first period.

The Wranglers extended their lead to 3-0 on Jeff May’s second-period goal but goalie Mitch O’Keefe lost his shutout bid when Luke Fulghum put Colorado on the board at the 6:29 mark. Las Vegas held a 4-1 lead going into the third periods and Hughesman made it 5-1 with his second of the game at the 12:39 mark. The Eagles scored twice in a 3:32 span to close to within 5-3. But despite holding a 38-20 edge in shots on goal, Colorado could not get any closer as O’Keefe turned aside 35 shots.

The same two teams meet again at 6:05 p.m. Friday.
