Las Vegas firefighters respond to apartment fire

An apartment unit was gutted after a fire at the Charleston Gardens Apartments in east Las Vegas Monday morning.

Firefighters responded about 6:30 a.m. to fire and smoke coming from the second floor of one of the units at 4850 E. Charleston Blvd., near Charleston and Nellis boulevards.

Crews evacuated the residents of the 32-unit building and extinguished the fire within minutes, according to Las Vegas Fire spokesman Tim Szymanski.

There were no reported injuries, but the American Red Cross is assisting three residents who were displaced by the fire.

The damage was estimated at $35,000.
